I was IBS-D for more years than I can count. Since I quit smoking 5 weeks ago, I've been IBS-C ever since (with incontinence on one occasion). I'm slowly increasing my Acacia, and increasing insoluble fiber, but nothing has helped. I also had severe pain yesterday, which I don't normally get. Should I go back to the BTC diet? That helped greatly with my D - does it also help with C? I don't know what else to do.

Hi First, congrats on quitting smoking! That is great and must have been and must still be very difficult. It is amazing what cigarettes can do to your bowels...there are actually many GI problems that can be caused by cigarettes or masked by cigarettes. Many GI problems will show themselves once you quit smoking. My guess is that your body is just getting use to its new "environment" but it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor due to your change in symptoms (I am a medical student) and make sure that there is nothing new going on. I wish you luck in quitting and congrats again!

Thanks Dmdentre. Yes, I had a doctor's appt a couple of weeks ago, but he wasn't much help. Just said it was typical of IBS and gave me a prescription for hemmoroids. He's GI specialist #3, but at least he finally diagnosed me as having IBS after two others failed to offer a diagnosis in a 5 year period. Thanks for the encouragement, and quitting smoking sure became a whole lot easier after I figured out how much it was affecting my IBS. And you're a medical student? Ha ha - you probably need more luck than I do right now, as I'm sure you're bound to get overwhelmed by it all at times. Hope you're getting close to seeing that light at the end of the tunnel.

Keep increasing the insoluble fiber while getting lots of soluble fiber as well. Another key to fighting C is daily exercise.
Heather had a real nice summary of how to deal with IBS-C in a couple of her newsletters. Go to the "IBS News & Reviews" link at the top of the page, and you should be able to find them!

Thanks AC. I'm slowly increasing the IS and exercise almost daily, with at least three days a week at the gym and the rest at home. I've also started trying to get a correct dosage with Natural Calm. I feel a little lost at this point, as C has never been my problem before. So far, I seem to have accomplished dealing with it in all the wrong ways, but I'll keep on trying! Yes, thanks, I will check out the News and Reviews.
