Thanks, I know I don't have Crohn's and I was told by my other doctor that Colitis is the same as IBS??? I really wish they had a certain test that checks for lactose intolerance for sure!!! I know dairy is a trigger for people without IBS, but I would love to have some cheese!!!

You may want to check out colitis with your GI doc again. Colitis, at least ulcerative colitis is quite different from IBS.

There are lactose intolerance test see NIH web page Of course one test is to wait until you are stable then eat a good helping of cottage cheese and see if it produces D.

Yeah, I know ulcerative colitis is not the same, but I will ask. I have always been up and down with lactose and therefore I try to stay away from it. Unfortunatley I don't stabilize very well, how long should a person be stable before they try the cottage cheese? I have not drank milk in years, and everyonce in a while, I will eat a spoon of low fat cottage cheese or try ff cheese, and sometimes it bothers me and sometimes it doesn't, so I stay away!! At least I know there is a test, I wonder with the breath test if you have to have eaten something with lactose in it to get a good result....Thanks

I believe with the breath test that they have you drink a lactose beverage adn then monitor your breath for hydrogen levels. You might want to ask your GI doc what he/she thinks about digesting the proteins in dairy and if this could be a problem for you. Even though you may not be lactose intolerant, a lot of IBSers seem to have problems digesting any milk or dairy product.

Good luck with your new doctor! I hope you get some answers!

Are you going to take a list of all the meds and treatments you've tried for IBS? This might help your new doctor figure out something else that could help. I always have to take a list with me because I get nervous when I'm at the doctor's office and I forget everything.

I have always been puzzed as the "reg flag" is the pain awakening you at night and diarrhea awakening you at night, whereas, the majority of my attacks are usually during the night and awaken me from a sleep. But, I have the reports and pics that I have IBS, but no one has ever told me why at night? GRRRR

I find that confusing too! I've been reading your posts for a while now, and I've noticed you mentioning having attacks at night. This isn't common for IBSers (although just because it's uncommon doesn't mean it never happens), unless you eat a trigger before bedtime, but you don't seem like someone who would do something like that. I'm glad you'll be bringing this up to the doctor - just make sure he listens to you.

No, I do not eat any triggers before I got to bed, my dinner is usually my fastes meal, followed by either pepperming tea or fennel, depending on my tummy. I'm back from the doctor, I feel like he thinks I'm looking for pain medication...geeehhh can I get a break. He's doing a CT scan Tuesday, oral, rectally & IV WOO HOO and he said if that doesn't thing that he wants to do his own colonoscopy because he's been "bitten" inthe past relying on other physician's reports.....I don't want a 4th colonoscopy!!! Anyway, he ordered the celiac test and a few others, didn't seem concerned about my weight loss, and told me that where my pain is, it not typical of IBS either, he is looking for adhesions, however if I would have had any, they would have seen them with my last two laporoscopies, the more they go in there, the more I risk getting adhesions!!! He asked me what kind of work I do and I told her right now I don't I just graduated and he asked me what I do and I told him a chemical dependency counselor and he said oh, do you have a history of that, and I said NO, my husband did(He's a recovering alcoholic)....which is why I think, he thinks I'm drug seeking, and because he told me that if my pain gets worse he doesn't prescribe narcotics and he would have to send me to a pain specialist.........now what does that sound like to you guys??? I took 1 darvocet after my hysterectomy, then tylenol, not even ibuprofen.......I feel like an idiot now. Plus he made the comment that all my records are at another hospital and he doesn't go to that hospital. Well, he came recommended by an M.D, and I've always worked for D.O.'s in the past....So that's my story, CT scan Tuesday and we go from there. Wish me luck. Thanks

This is correct. The HBT requires you to fast for 8 hours and then drink a lactose beverage. I was certain lactose was a problem in about 30 minutes, but the test confirmed it.

I'm primarily C, but some of my d bouts have struck in the middle of the night. I've been woken in the early early morning feeling unwell or nauseous or just having to go and had that devolve into a full on, hours on the pot, D attack.

Thanks guys, now I don't feel so stupid. I can't plan my attacks if I could they wouldn't be from 1-4:45 am on days I have to work!!! My colonoscopies both showed marked/extreme spasm in my transverse and descending colon, the descending being the primary colperate for my pain. Anyway, I was hoping for some compassion and niceness. But I think he was focused on me being a drug seeker. I know the wording since I've worked as a nurse for years....Anyway I do not want drugs, I'd take a colostomy before I want narcotics. He just wasn't what I was hoping for!!! But we'll see, he is the first one who's ordered a CT of my abdomin that included not only oral contrast, but rectal and IV!! Woo Hoo Can't wait for that one. So in IBS I meet the criteria and I have a descending colon that complely shuts and does not open like it should.....now I have this stupid new pain from that massive IBS attack a week and a half ago, that hurts. I thought my hysterectomy was supposed to make me feel better.......geesshh
