Yup. They're fine for me as long as I don't eat the skins. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams are all okay.

Yes! They're safe! And you should try Heather's Smoky Sweet Potato Soup. I just made it tonight and it's one of my favorites

both the yellow and orange varieties are actually both sweet potatoes, we just call them two different things, generally the white/yellow are called the sweet potatoes and the yams are the orange ones, in canada at least, but the actual thing is that they are both sweet potatoes, yams are actually a tropical fruit that we don't get up here in north america.

They are all tuberous roots, not fruit. And they won't help to soften stool. Sweet potatoes and yams are related to the potato. Potatoes are among the safest foods a D can eat (minus the skin). All of these will constipate you if anything.
Maybe I missed something in the conversation but I didn't want anyone thinking that these foods will help "get things moving".

Sweet potatoes actually does help soften the stool. It may not get things moving as quickly as IF, but it will help.
I have worked with champion body builders and a nutritionist. When bodybuilding, most people increase their protein intake. When you eat too much protein, you get kind of stopped up, or C. When that happens, they recommend eating sweet potatoes because it softens the stool, and helps you "go" along with the other fruits and vegetables you eat.

My stools got a bit more loose after eating sweet potato (we only have the orange ones here, I think, at least the ones we have are orange with pink skin), but I wasn't sure it was from the sweet potato.
I see there are different opinions if it is safe or not. So should I add this to my list of supposedly safe things that may not be safe after all?

Sweet potatoes (w/o the skin) are generally safe, even if we have different opinions. Personally, they tend to bind me up, along with yams and potatoes, but it doesn't seem to be that way with everyone. Not surprising, especially with those who have IBS. Mostly you have to figure out if they are okay for you. If they give you trouble, eat them in moderation or not at all.
