Hello
I've just purchased Heather's book, "The First Year". I've suffered from severe Obsessive Complusive Disorder since I was 15 and since early 1996 have had problems with my stomach as a result of the anxiety that the OCD caused. TO cut a long story short I was successfully treated for my OCD in June 2005 and with that I believed that my stomach problem would disappear; it has not. For years my GI system has been in a mess but it is only over the last few years that I realised that a lot of the time the GI distress would occur completely independently of the anxiety.
So that's my background. The specifics:-
I am suffering from severe abdominal pain to the point that it is completely maddening. I haven't been able to sleep properly for months and I can't remember the last time I woke up with out my lower abdomen in a great deal of pain.
I also suffer from terrible flatulence. Pretty embarrassing, it's not like I do it around people but it's very uncomfortable and it's depressing when you just seem to be farting all the time.
Although I used to suffer from bad bouts of diarrhoea that has eased up now and I get constipated quite frequently. (Isn't it great talking about this stuff?) When my stools are looser I never seem to "empty" my bowells completely and the same goes if I'm constipated.
What prompted me to buy Heather's book and do something about this was the my last visit to the doc's. My blood coutn was perfect. And once again I was told I was suffering with a functional disorder. (I had an upper GI test in 2004 and an abdominal ultrasound.) So my mental health is pretty good my physical health is good but I feel terrible.
IS there hope for me? The book is pretty uplifting and I'm a patient man.
Kind regards
Tim

Howdy Tim,
Yes, there is hope for you. There is hope for everyone. Heather also has a book called "Eating For IBS". If you haven't already gotten that one, I strongly recommend it. It has all kinds of wonderful recipes ad more info on IBS. Also check into gut-directed hypnotherapy. It's very helpful. Welcome to the boards!

Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to learning from you and the other members of the site.
Kind regards
Tim(UK)
P.S. I have "Eating for IBS" on order and the hypnotherapy series heather recommends on order too. Would you believe that Michael Mahoney lives in the county next to mine in Cheshire, England?

Welcome! Yes, there is hope. The diet has worked wonders for me. And I've found that it truly doesn't mean culinary deprivation, either. It's quite a change, but there are still plenty of tasty things to eat. Hope you start feeling better soon.

Welcome Tim and yes there is tons of hope!!! This is not one of those sites that doesn't put theory into practice. Any and every question seems to have come up (embarrassing or not) and reading everyone's experiences and feelings will make you feel like you are not alone. Great that you ordered the hypno. And great that you are patient, b/c even though the diet and supplements (if you wish) are wonderful, it takes a lot of time to figure out what is right for YOU and what will work for YOUR body. I am still trying to figure it out (since Sept.) but along the way I have felt better than I ever have in the last 12 years which keeps me going and optimistic (well, most of the time ). Welcome to the boards and good luck to you!!

Nice. I went to see a CHT in person when I decided to give hypno a shot. It worked so well for me. I wish I would have tried it earlier than I did. But I'm glad that I went regardless of timing. It helped give me my life back.

Hi Tim - saw your post on the other thread, but popped over here to read your background - I have had IBS since 1983, and was almost housebound - after almost 20 years of suffering, I tried Mike's program - the only thing that helped me to the degree that I can now function. Since you are so close to Mike's area, you can easily contact him if you need to! He is very kindly and helped me through.
The hypno is not a cure-all, but it comes close to the best thing you can do for the mind-gut connection to ease or in many cases, eliminate IBS symptoms... wishing you all the best in feeling better.
