Why the mucus?

Why do those w/ IBS have more mucus in our BM's? There are times when I have more and just wonder if it's something I've eaten or if it's just something normal.

I always had to deal with that before I was able to stabilize my system. It's not anything to worry about, really. In that it shouldn't be a symptom of some other, new condition. It's mostly just annoying.

The intestines are mucous membranes, much like your nose is. You always have a little bit of mucus in your nose, it helps protect the membranes. But when you have a cold or allergies, for instance, you may produce more of it.
So if I see a lot of mucus coming out on the other end, I take it as a sign that something I ate recently has caused irritation.
