Hi All - I definitely have IBS D and have been trying to find a way to satisfy my coffee cravings ... I've tried an herbal coffee Tecino (not too great) and I've tried Postum which is OK, does anyone have any other suggestions? I really miss my coffee~

If you do a search for "coffee" at the top of the page over the last few months, you will see some threads about replacements. I drink Soyfee and I say lots about loving it in my posts (and I am not an easy to please person when it comes to food/taste). Soyfee French Vanilla is what I get off soyfee.com (a little expensive). You can email them and ask if a Heath Food store around you sells it to avoid shipping costs. I can empathize. I finally moved about two minutes from a Dunkin Donuts (drive through!) and I decided to give up coffee. Surprisingly it is the one thing that I have NEVER cheated on not even a sip. I am d too but what I am more afraid of is becoming used to the caffeine again and then going through withdrawal (which lasted about a week.) Good luck. I hope you find something you like. (Rocomojo has a website too but I never tried it and they never responded to my emails about sending samples).

I have been a major coffee drinker for the last 14 years. I took the month of December to "de-caffeinate" and have turned to herbal tea as a "substitute". Do you like herbal tea? I have found that I like the lipton herbal teas as well as the "Stash" brand but do not like Celestial Seasonings at all.

Having found a substitute, I no longer crave coffee except on rainy days!

I do miss coffee and it still get me up in the morning when my husband makes it. For the last year or so I have accumulated such a variety of teas in my pantry. Vanilla Chai, Rooibos Chai, Celestial seasonings holiday flavors and dessert teas. I have them all and I love them with cream. Give it a try.

In addition to coffee not being good for your tummy, did you know that coffee sucks the calcium out of your body? I miss coffee too but I remember that fact when I want to reach for a coffee. There are many good tasting herbal teas out there and I hope you find one soon.

Try Decaffe Roast Tea made by Yogi Teas. You can find it at Tealand.com

I thought I would miss coffee a lot more than I actually do. Turns out I LOVE peppermint tea. Just finding something else I really enjoy seems to have made the difference. Hubby and I call peppermint "happy tea"--in addition to being good for the digestive system, it really lifts my moods! (I'm generally optimistic by nature anyway, but I'm pretty sublime after drinking my peppermint).

... and I am not a person who likes other things with mint, such as mint chocolate chip ice cream, York peppermint patties, or starlight mints. In tea form, peppermint is just different... better.

I also like the Stash brand decaf chai tea... I make chai lattes with almond milk, delicious!

I like the Rocomojo better than the Teechino. Teechino was too bitter for me; Rocomojo tastes more like regular coffee. I've seen it at Wild Oats and Whole Foods.

Im not sure if you were asking me Jordy but anyway my favorite flavors are Decaf Vanilla Chai by Stash and Sugar Cookie Sleighride by Celestial Seasonings. Most brands of flavored Chai tea are a bit spicy from the cinnamon and black pepper they use. I drink peppermint/ginger/licorice tea at night after I feel a dinner might cause discomfort. I have been pretty much stable for 1 month even with eating some dairy and being a little bad. I take a probiotic before dinner and a peppermint/caraway oil cap (Regimint)3 times a day

Thank you all for your suggestions, and I have found some herbals that are definitely well worth drinking. I love fennel tea, wild orange herbal, peppermint, but still crave my coffee. And, will definitely try some of the products you all have mentioned! I also tried POSTUM not so fond of that, and as the others mentioned Teechino is quite bitter and kind of smells bad to me. Thanks All!

I've been addicted to coffee for over 40 years. About 4 years ago, I cut out the stuff at Heather's very strong recommendation, and, although it sure wasn't easy to do, I got better. I tried the rocomojo and the teccino and the other substitute, which I won't discuss here for historical reasons, and I'm here to tell ya, there just really ain't no substitute for the real thing.

I'm stable now; my IBS is pretty much in remission, and I am back on real coffee once again -- but it's gonna be short-lived. I am seeing a nutritionist as a result of my heart attack, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, diverticulosis, hypothyrodism, yaddah yaddah yaddah, and I'm sure she'll be taking me off all caffeine and stimulants of any kind. I know this because the book she has me reading specifies no stimulants.

My nutritionist is awesome. She took one look at my food journal -- volume EIGHTEEN, thankyouvery much -- and the first words out of her mouth, after discovering I have IBS in addition to all the above, was: "NO WHEAT." So far, I haven't been taken off the coffee, but I know it's coming. One step at a time, and right now, it's the wheat. No wheat, no gluten. And damn if I don't feel better already. Despite having my daily morning coffee, I haven't had an IBS attack OR A DIVERTICULITIS ATTACK in a long time. I'm scheduled for another colonoscopy with the aim of surgically removing a part of my colon next month, but I'm thinking I may not need it, thanks to this new diet.

BTW, I'm off all hydrogenated crapola, and my nutritionist increased my veggie intake to at least 2 cups a day, as well as more fruit, a lotta beans and legumes, and, believe it or not, real butter. Go figure.

Oh, and there really IS a God after all! She has me on dark chocolate -- that's right, folks, dark chocolate -- several pieces a day, provided it's at least 70% cacao. Now this is an eating program I think I can handle!

Damn, I sure got off the subject of coffee! Sorry. Listen, if it really bothers you, try Soy Dream Mocha Fudge frozen dessert. If you do a search you'll find a million posts about the stuff. It's awesome. It contains a little bit of coffee, but doesn't disturb the colon at all. It truly satisfies a coffee craving -- well, maybe a little. It tastes 100% like real coffee. Enjoy!

Sorry to go off topic... my friend was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis and I was wonderint... does the "No Wheat" thing have to do with that?

I appologise for going off topic again...

No wheat doesn't mean no gluten...unless the nutritionist said to also avoid gluten. Not sure how it would help diverticulitis either.

I had to give up coffee awhile ago, and I tried all the subs. I was making them in a regular coffee maker, but they weren't coming out right, they would be to strong or not strong enough. My mom told me to try a French Press (Target has three different sizes) after acouple of tries, it came out perfect. Plus there's a bonus, it doesn't take up any counter top space. Hope it helps.

The no-wheat, no-gluten thing was really all about my IBS. My nutritionist is convinced it's the trigger for IBS, despite my protestations to the contrary. Obviously I'm doing as she says, and I gotta tell ya, I'm feelin' pretty good so far.

The jury is out on the culprit for diverticulosis. It used to be that nuts and seeds were suspect, then it was fat. Now, who knows?! Next week they'll come up with something new.
