Ok, so here's the situation: tomorrow I have asked my grandma out for Sunday lunch with me at a new pub. The last time she saw me each in public was a total disaster (think I ran to the loo a total of 6 times throughout the meal, which is strange anyway because I don't even get D attacks! I am IBS-C!) I was so anxious about what to eat, and when it arrived, I just poked at it with my fork because I was so afraid to eat anything! Plus I was very extremely underweight then and all she wanted to do was to feed me things whenever I came to her house (mainly cake and milk and anything high calorie which I had to say no to!) So tomorrow I really want to be able to take her out for a nice meal, and for me to actually be able to eat mine!! (And preferably not to have to run to the loo in the middle!)
So, I went to the restaurant just to see what they offered so I could ask you all what you think my best option would be. I think if I choose beforehand I won't feel so anxious. Ok, here are the the options in more detail:

Chicken Korma - Tender pieces of chicken in a mild creamy sauce with rice, poppadum and mango chutney dip.
Chicken Tikka Masala - Tender pieces of chicken in a mild masala sauce with rice, poppadum and a sour cream and chive dip.
Vegetable Chilli (was on the 'specials' board so not sure exactly what veggies are in it but is served with rice.
Chicken BBQ Enchaladas - Two tortillas filled with strips of chicken and BBQ vegetables, topped with a smoked cheddar cheese sauce with potato wedges and a side salad.
Cajun Chicken - Chicken breast marinated in spices to give it the taste of the Deep South with chips and side salad (I would probably ask for rice as I don't like chips!)
Cauliflower and Red Pepper Gratin - Cauliflower florets with sliced potato and red peppers in a rich Cheddar cheese sauce with potatoes and vegetables.
Run Away and Hide in a Dark Corener - self explanatory!!

By the way there were many more options but they either all included red meat or were deep fried!! Only thing that worries me is that I'm not sure if I am wheat intollerant, so not too sure about the tortillas. I have been tested for a wheat allergy and it came back negative but I always used to get very bloated with bread....but it was usually whole wheat bread...so maybe I will be ok with refined white breads...but still a bit scared to try it out!

I would really appreciate any help you can offer here guys, so get choosin'!!

Cajun chicken at least doesn't come in a sauce so I'd stick to that and ask for rice or a baked potato on the side. Don't have any sour cream or salad.

If not, chicken tikka masala but scrape off the sauce and again ask for rice or baked potato.

Don't go on an empty stoamch, and don't force yourself to eat too much of it, you can always ask for a doggie bag.

I would choose either the cajun chicken or the vegetable chili.
If you get the cajun chicken, definitely get the rice instead of the chips. which would be too high in fat. And don't forget to get the dressing on the side for the salad, and to eat it last (and maybe not too much of it).
with the vegetable chili, just make sure that they are not going to put a cheese topping on it. You can probably ask them to leave it off if they are.
The enchiladas might be an okay option if you can get them to leave the neese sauce off entirely. Just make sure to ask whether or not there is any dairy inside the enchilada itself.
Also, if they serve bread with the meal, have a slice before eating anything else.
Remember to relax and enjoy the meal. I always try to approach restaurant meals with the thought that I will make the best choices I can, and then focus on enjoying myself. Because if the food is going to cause problems, I might as well at least enjoy eating it - otherwise I've only made myself miserable twice. Have a fun lunch!

I looked up masala and it sais it's a combination of spices. It also sais it's mild...

So, I'd choose that, seems the least dangerous, and would ask for the cream and dip to be brought on the side.

I hope it goes well!

I'd probably pick the Cajun, or Tikka. Just be careful that any of the sauces they use do not contain dairy, including yogurt.

But probably the cajun chicken is going to be your safest option.

The first 2 - the Indian dishes - have cream and ghee (butter) in the sauce. They don't mention it, but trust me on this one. You should also avoid cheese at all costs, so that nixes the other options. If I were you, I'd get the cajun chicken. Good luck!

I have got a similar situation coming up next week - big family get-together in a restaurant. In my case, there's nothing on the menu that I could eat, so I have phoned ahead and asked if they would be willing to serve me a plain jacket potato and chicken breast, and they said that was fine. Boring, I know... but I really suffer if I eat wrongly, and from experience I don't think it's worth it.

Perhaps that's a bit extreme, but I have always taken the view that my health is important and what I put in my body is my own decision. I think that Heather is of the same opinion. From experience, most restaurants are quite happy to help, especially with advance warning.

I went with the majority of you who voted and I chose the chicken tikka masala. The result? Well, all I can say is if that was meant to be a MILD curry dish then I wouldn't like to try their hot one! And it was SO saucy! I had to scrape all the sauce off the chicken pieces and just ended up eating that with the rice (the amount of which could probably have fit into an egg cup!) It was nice and I ate most of it, and I don't feel like it has affected me...but since my main symptoms are constipation and bloating, it's hard to tell! (Except I am burping an awful lot more than normal!) Maybe next time if I go there I will choose the cajun chicken. I agree with you atomic rose, it was my safest bet and if I had seen your post before I left the house, I would have gone for that! Even so, my grandma had a great time and she seemed happy which was all that mattered to me today. Thanks everyone!!
