I was just wondering if you knew if papaya, mango, oranges, applesauce, and kiwi are safe to eat on a low fructose diet.
How about canned fruits. Are they all okay or not, since they are cooked???
Also, how many servings of fruit do you limit yourself to a day?
I'm trying to eliminate high amounts of fructose from my diet to see if it helps the bloat. But, I snack on these fruits often. What do you snack on or have for dessert instead of fruits? What do you add to your cereals if not fruit?
Thanks.

Do you think 1/2 Tablespoon of honey added to a single serving meal is too much? I just made the chicken and artichoke recipe here on the sight and for 4 servings, it required 2 T of honey. I made this before I decided to go low fructose and I really hate to throw it out now!!
Also, what about bread or waffles that contain pear and grape juice? Is the amount still significant?
And what about a loaf of bread that requires 1 1/2 cups applesauce? I often use applesauce as a substitute for oil in recipes. Is that not good if eating low fructose?
Thanks again. I really want to do this correctly!

Jordy, I tend to follow the dietary guidelines regarding fructose outlined in the article referenced below
It recommends avoiding the follow foods
- Fruit: apple, pear, guava, honeydew melon, mango, nashi fruit, pawpaw/papaya, quince, star fruit (carambola), watermelon
- Honey
- Major sweetening ingredient: High-fructose corn syrup, Corn syrup solids, Fructose and Fruit juice concentrate
- Dried fruit: apple, apricot, currant, date, fig, pear, prune, raisin, sultana
- Fruit juice, canned packing juice
- Fruit pastes and sauces: chutney, relish, plum sauce, sweet and sour sauce, barbecue sauce
- Fruits with high sugar content: cherry, grape, persimmon, lychee, apple, pear, watermelon
- Coconut: milk, cream
- Dried fruit bars
- Fortified wines: sherry, port, etc
The fruits it recommends are
- Stone fruit: apricot, nectarine, peach, plum (note these contain sorbitol)
- Berry fruit: blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, cranberry, raspberry, strawberry
- Citrus fruit: kumquat, grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin, orange, tangelo
- Other fruits: banana, jackfruit, kiwi fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, rhubarb, tamarillo
I like to have 2-3 small servings per day. However, I have to avoid some of recommend fruits because the IF content is too high for me. I hope this helps

Oh no, I eat papaya and mango every single day!
It didn't mention applesauce at all. Or bananas and kiwi or canned fruits...do you know about these? I eat kiwi everyday.
What is considered a "small serving"? Which ones do you eat? What do you think of the applesauce bread?
sorry so many questions. I really respect your opinion though.

Kiwi and banana is on the recommended list (listed below the don't eat list). Apples from which applesauce is on the don't eat list.
Many canned fruits contain apple or pear juice. These juices are on the don't eat list.
I only eat banana, kiwi, some berries and sometimes apricots and peaches without skins. Be careful because canned apricots and peaches are frequently package in apple and/or pear juice.
I won't eat applesauce bread.
For me a serving is 1/2 a medium sized kiwi or banana.

I suggest you remove all fruit and foods containing fruit or fruit juices from your diet for a week and see if you experience a change in your symptoms. If your symptoms improve then add in small amounts of fruit from the recommended list that I posted.

What do you eat instead of fruits? Like for snacks and desserts?
You use the full amount of oil in baking rather than substitute applesauce too?
This is so hard! I have so much fructose in my house right now! Maybe I will wait until it's all gone cuz I can't afford to throw it all out ... especially if removing it doesn't help!!
Thanks so much.

I know what you mean about high fructose foods being everywhere. I was a fructose junkie
No - I use very little oil in baking - I would guess usually less than 10% of what a recipe recommends. I only use oil olive. I use peeled and shredded zucchini instead of applesauce in my loafs.
I only snack in the evening and then I usually eat carbohydrates such as my zucchini loaf and pretzels. I eat my fruit with meals which always contain a good base of SF, especially foods high in resistant starch.

Hi Sly, Do you know if sweet potatoe (pumpkin, squash) or carrots are HF foods? Does the high fructose just apply to fruits? What Thanks, Debbie IBS-C

Generally speaking high fructose occurs in fruits, fruit juices and honey. The only vegetable that I know of that might cause a problem is globe artichokes.
