Hi Guys,
Do you find low fat chicken based soups like Campbell's, etc are ok to eat? I had a bad reaction the last time I tried soup but it could have been something else I ate that day.

I had a hard time finding soup that didn't contain MSG as that is a huge trigger for me. I cannot tolerate it at all. I really like vegetable minestrone and it helps when I am leaning towards the C side. Imagine brand also makes good soups and I find them in the health food section of my grocery store.

I don't eat Campbell's anymore, but I do eat homemade soups made from 100% fat free chicken broth and vegetable broth (with no MSG). I also eat Amy's brand low fat alphabet soup, but I pick out the corn. I believe both Amy's and Imagine have other safe soups, but I haven't tried any others.

I do well with Progresso chicken noodle soups in the can, but not the quickie microwave deals.

The cans do contains some MSG, but it is way far down on the ingredients list and has never bothered me.

Healthy Choice soups and organic cannned soups are the only safe ones I have seen. Not all flavors are safe of course but the veggie one is good and the chicken noodle and chicken rice are safe.

A lot of those have high fructose corn syrup in them, which gives me loads of trouble.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the comments. To be honest it was almost a year ago that I last ate store bought canned chicken soup. I can't remember what else could have triggered it but man it scared me enough to stay away until recently. I have looked at some of the baked noodle soups and rice noodle soups but they too seem to give pain and D (must be in the seasoning as the noodles are practically fat free and not whole wheat/grain. Any more suggestions? Chicken sandwiches are getting a little dull for work and on the road. Thanks!

I LOVE Amy's soups and chilis. There is a pretty wide variety, and they're all organic.

Just put a skinless chicken breast in 4 cups of water. add a stalk of celery and a carrot with some onion and salt. Let it boil at least an hour and a 1/2 and strain it. Its simple. Boil some pasta or rice and put it together. I chop the cooked carrots and add them to the soup, I love them.
I try to stay away from canned as I had the same experience as you. But it definitely could have been a combo of other foods.

Yup, I've found that the Asian soups with the powdered flavor packets can be problematic. When you say "baked noodle," you mean like ramen? I would be extra careful about that. Some of those noodles (especially the cheapie ones) are fried, though they don't look or seem fried.

We recently discovered Maggi brand "Taste of Asia" Hot & Sour soup; it comes in a packet, but it's tasty and doesn't cause either of us problems. We usually add an egg white (the package directs a whole egg), as well as extra veggies and a touch of chili oil and sugar to it. If you can find it, might be worth a try. We buy it at Publix (southeastern USA). You might also like the McDougall "RightFoods" cup meals.

Personally, tomatoes are not safe for me, and HFCS is not safe for some others.

Really? That stuff has always made me ill, even before I had IBS. Nothing by Healthy Choice has ever sat well with me.

Not trying to start an argument at all, but there's some additive they put in their products that is not my friend!
Just another example of how different we all are, I guess.

I ate Lentil Soup most of my life but the last time I ate it which was last year I got "D", so I have been scared to try it again even though I am stable. It never gave me gas either, but this year I am in a different stage of my IBS so I dont know how I will react. I loved the stuff and I miss it.

Thanks for all the posts. The "baked noodles" are actually baked and not fried unlike 99% of similar products. They advertise 98% fat free (I wonder how much 100% equates to.) And then I found similar products with rice noodles (which seem to work a lot better with me than normal noodles, pasta, etc) But even with the rice noodle versions it must be the seasoning packet. Man, I would kill for a packaged or canned soup that is actually safe for us.

Which ones do you like? Are they all safe? The chili is okay too?

Do you need to puree these?

Nope! No pureeing necessary. I just take four Beano before I eat it, as I do with any meal containing beans and/or veggies. I especially like the Fire Roasted Southwestern Vegetable, Lentil Vegetable, Minestrone, Pasta 3-Bean, and Black Bean Chilli. I need to try some of the other chilli varieties. I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting, but that's all I can think of right now. They're yummy! Some of the soups can be as high as 25-30% calories from fat, but just have some white bread or rice with the soup to bring that number down. The black bean chilli is especially low fat.

Yes, I know. I have a tough time with tomato sauce but I can eat slices of a regular tomato so I was just looking for a tomato soup that maybe was safe (without the HFCS). I haven't researched...maybe Amy's makes one. Just curious if anyone out there who tolerates tomatoes has found a safe tomato soup (perhaps in the general grocery store ).

I like Amy's Chunky Tomato Bisque, but I've learned not to have several days of tomato products in a row. Not because it causes IBS issues - it's just a little too much acid for me.

But Amy's Chunky Tomato Bisque with Heather's tuna melt - that's some great eating!

Are you sure it's the HFCS that's bothering you? How about the citric acid they ALWAYS put in tomato sauce? That's what sometimes bothers me (I have gastritis).
