I am a vegetarian IBS-D sufferer who is allergic to soy and rice. I've been looking for a protein shake mix that is okay, and whey seems to be the only thing besides rice and soy protein. Is whey protein safe for IBS-D? The ingredients of the shake mix I've purchased are as follows:
Cross-Flow Micro-Filtered and Ultra-Filtered Whey Protein Isolate, Micro-Filtered Whey Protein Concentrate, Free-Form Branched Chain Amino Acids(BCAAs)(Leucine, Valine, Isoleucine), Free-Form L-Glutamine, Stevia.

How do you know you are allergic to rice? That is rare if not unheard of.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

No, it's not safe? That's what my body was telling me.
I had an allergy test done a few weeks ago, and rice tested positive. It's possible it's a false positive, but when I tried taking rice protein again recently I felt it caused problems. I'm not 100% certain about the rice allergy, but the soy allergy TOTALLY makes sense (which blows for a vegetarian).

The EFI diet says that all dairy should be avoid. However, if you scan the message board you will find that many people can tolerate dairy. I can tolerate dairy as long as I take lactase to help digest the lactose. I can tolerate whey as long as I take lactase because it can contain lactose.
Perhaps you will have to give it a try to see if you can tolerate it.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of diary do you tolerate? Can you give me an example of what you might eat or drink without a problem? And are you offically lactose intolerant? Thanks.

I am officially lactose intolerant. I take lactase with foods containing dairy products. I can drink low fat milk, yogurt and low fat ice cream. I use yogurt in baking. I rarely eat cheese because of the fat content. However, once in a while I eat a couple of very small, thin slices of lactose free mozzarella on my bison burger.

Thanks Syl. I'm thinking way ahead for when I am completely stable, but I am hoping that maybe I'll be able to tolerate a bowl of cereal with Lactaid milk in it just once or twice per week. It's the only real area that I'm really missing...and I guess some cheese too...I would love it if I could have a slice like you on something with no adverse reaction. Thank you for your response.

Absolutely not. I recall after I worked out I would have a protein shake, and before I realized what I couldn't eat, I would be baffled at how I would go from feeling great to sh*tty in 2 seconds.
