What should we use for our sugar and cooking needs? Regular sugar is loaded with calories and is bad for the teeth, any safe subs?

Things like stevia, manuka honey, and applesauce can be substituted into recipes or everyday use. Example would be to sweeten your tea or soyfee with stevia, or manuka honey. I've heard of applebutter or applesauce being used in recipes instead of sugar and/or artificial sweetners.

I think stevia is going to be the only no-calorie sweetener you'll find that's safe for those with IBS. You can cook and bake with it, but it will take some fiddling around to get the substitutions right - it's so much sweeter than sugar, and it has an herbal taste to it that takes a little getting used to.

Why are you trying to cut out sugar? It is not an IBS trigger. Just curious.

Sugar really doesn't have all that many calories. Personally, I use it only in baking and occasionally in recipes with lots of tomatoes. Most of the low-fat baking recipes call for WAY more sugar than they need, IMO, so like another poster said, I often use less than called for. As a general rule for experimenting, try using about 75% of what the recipe calls for. If that works, you can try going down to 50% and see how it turns out.
