Hummus, Safe?

I've noticed mixed results with hummus. Sometimes it can make me feel bloated and cause skin irritation. Does anybody else get this? I usually try and buy the Trader Joe's version, I simply would like to know is Hummus and Tahini considered safe, and would taking Beano help prevent bloating and skin irritation?

Hummus and tahini are safe, as long as you watch the fat content, and eat it with SF (mmmm, pita bread).
Beano will probably help with the bloating, but the skin irritation makes it sound like you're possibly allergic to something in the hummus - maybe an additive of some kind. Try making your own hummus; it's incredibly easy, and tastes a thousand times better than the store-bought stuff anyway. And it's cheap!

I've also had some gas and bloating with hummus (I've been eating it regularly this week), and I'm going to try having it with beano. If making your own hummus isn't an option, try switching brands. I've been buying the Cedars brand - it's tasty and had a lower fat content than the other kinds at my supermarket.

I buy the trader joe's. It has 40% calories from fat, which by Hummus standards is low.
Atomic Rose, thanks, does the board have good recipes?

I snack on hummus almost daily (Athenos brand, usually the "Greek Style") and have no real problems with it. I will say though that some of the other flavors I've noticed do contain HFCS but the one I like (thankfully!) doesn't.
I love the stuff!

As far as a good, basic, authentic hummus recipe goes, this one is probably your best bet. I would skip the olive oil (traditionally, it's drizzled on top, not mixed in with the hummus anyway), and start without half that amount of tahini. Brands of tahini differ a bit in flavor, I find - I don't think I've ever used more than 2 tbsp in mine, because what I get here has a strong sesame flavor.
Tahini, by the way, keeps indefinitely in the refrigerator. It can be a little expensive to buy, but when you take its shelf life into consideration, it's not too bad.

I would be careful of tahini it is greater than 50% oil by weight. However, it is low in saturated oil. I make my own humus but I use about 1/4 of the tahini that is called for in most recipes.
