I recently started taking Nortiptyline to help my IBS-D. I think that it's been helping, but it could be that I've been stabilizing. Does anyone know anything about the possible effects of antidepressants such as this one for treating IBS?

I used to take this - it caused terrible heartburn and dry mouth and it really didn't seem to help me all that much. I stopped taking it about 2 months ago after weaning myself off. I had a difficult time getting off as I got terrible headaches for the first couple of weeks after each time I decreased my dose.
Bottom line - it seemed to help a bit at first, but the side effects weren't worth it to me....

I take Elavil 20 mgs. per day. My doctor says that it helps with altering the perception of pain but does not decrease pain or other symptoms. I want to get off soon and I am not sure how I will handle the decrease in doses until I am off of it.

I don't have any side effects, so I'll probably be okay. It seems to have slowed my GI tract down which is great for me, considering I'm IBS-D. Is there anyone else that this has worked for?
