How do you cook with dry TVP? For example, if I want to make tacos with TVP how would I prepare the TVP for use in the recipe? Thanks for your help!

I've never made tacos with it, but I use it in spaghetti sauces a lot. Just treat it like ground beef; you'll just need to cook it in liquid. Most of those taco flavor packets you buy tell you to add water, so you'll just have to play with the amount of water you add.

Oh, okay so I would just need to make sure that I add water to it in the recipe. Great! Thanks I will give it a shot someday soon. Still expanding my diet and learning what works. I have been a pesca-vegetarian (but no dairy for me) for 10 years now so I am use to soy meats but I have never used the TVP...only the ready to use kinds. Thank you for your help.

If you've never cooked with TVP before, check out the sloppy joes recipe in the Recipe Index. It's a good introduction - it was the first TVP recipe I made! I think it calls for 8 oz tomato sauce, but I like to use half of that amount and add my favorite BBQ sauce to make up the difference. It's yummy!

I buy TVP at Wal Mart. We don't have a WF down here.

I did not know I could purchase it at Walmart. Do you purchase it from a Super Walmart? The ones that supply the grocery in addition to everything else? That will be much cheaper than Whole Foods. Thanks

Yes, I use a super Wal Mart. I just bought crumbled TVP called "Smart Ground". Sorry I can't remember the price. They had Italian, Taco and Original flavors. I like the Italian best but then I use it in spaghetti usually.
