In response to this post, and also you're one that you added to say you take Acacia 1 tsp 3 times a day.

I definetly suggest increasing the Acacia, slowly. Try increasing by 1/4 to 1/2 tsp, maybe once a week. Some IBS-C need to get to a higher dose of SFS.

For the C, try and get as much IF as you can, spread out through the day with safe SF meals/snacks. If you are eating lots of veggies they can cause some gas, and I take Beano for that. Drink lots of water and fennel tea.

Exercise also plays an important role in C. Getting regular exercise can help both with the C and gas. Yoga as well has many poses that help with gas. Some good exercises are to do ab crunches and lots of running.

And the last thing is patience, it will take time for it to get better but you're on the right track.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Heather says that constipation takes much longer to resolve even when you are using acacia. It is my understanding that you must drink plenty of water, get in vigourous exercise daily, and eat more IF's with a safe base to help with the C. Gas is the worst and I have always had problems with this--fennel tea brewed strong helps a lot--drink plenty.

Best,

Sufie

Do a board search on Natural Calm. A lot of us IBS-Cers take it daily. It's been my miracle "cure" for C! It also, in turn, helped with my gas.

Have you thought about taking Beano or a digestive enzyme with your meals?

The four things that have helped me a LOT with C and gas are:
1. Acacia
2. IBS self-hypnosis CDs
3. Beano/digestive enzymes
4. Eating small meals more often during the day. I probably eat 5 or 6 times every day.

Good luck!

I second the "gas" note -- I used to have a lot of gas because of the laxative I was taking (Miralax) and it went away when I switched to magnesium citrate (Natural Calm is a version of it).

HI Jeio! Just wondering how much NC you were taking now? I read a post that said you had reduced. HOW were you able to reduce and still "go"? I see you are still only taking 3 tsp of Acacia. Do you just eat lots of IF or beans or something?

I take so much stuff, including Miralax, and I still am not able to go regularly. You and Lisa Marie are doing leaps and bounds compared to me!

Hi, Jordy, about the magnesium, well, yes, I only take it "as needed" if I don't remember if I went to the bathroom in the near past (I don't obcess about that any more, have too much work for that). My doctor encouraged me to do that, she said it's not a problem to not go unless it is causing me pain. I don't go every day now (sometimes every day, sometimes once in 2 days, sometimes twice a day), but I don't feel discomfort. I have also started to gain weight (which I couldn't do before, but now I have to be carefull :):) )

Well, I don't like beans, so I don't eat them too often. I do eat IF -- I eat celery in soups, cauliflower (soup again), I also eat dairy (and that's a stimulant as you know), I eat my oatmeal every morning (with milk or water, depending on mood and contents of refrigerator ), also I eat brown rice mostly (basmati brown rice). Oh, I also eat apples and bananas, but these are safe... hmm... well that's it. I am eating extremely low fat and very safely (excluding the milk I put in my oatmeal and sometimes in baked goods) so I guess my body just adjusted to the current situation and doesn't need the laxative that often any more.

When I think about it, I only eat from very small set of foods, of which just the milk and cheese are triggers... I don't eat out often, don't eat junk food (fast food/candy/stuff like that), I eat really low fat (my skin is no longer oily, weird)

Hang in there, Jordy. Do you still have pain/bloating/gass issues or is it the "going often enough" that is the problem? I got really constipated (I really needed laxatives) when I first switched to the diet, as I didn't eat anything to stimulate my gut in fear it would hurt... and it stopped hurting after a point, so I could reintroduce those "stimulant" foods in a more controlled way. So, I took this as a divide and conquer problem:
1) Attack the pain - eat safe food even if you get constipated from it, at least it doesn't hurt
2) Once 1 is down, attack the C -- eat more IF (gradually).

That basically meant I went on white bread toast, rice(mostly brown), potato puree, baby food (made of bananas, LOL), bananas, apple sauce, almond milk/rice milk, oatmeal and cream of wheat, chicken breast and salmon, various (really safe) soups (such as potatoes with a little spices) while in stage 1). I don't remember cheating. I only ate this. It wasn't that exiting, but I don't live to eat, I eat to live. My body adjusted and problem 1) was virtually gone. Then I started paying attention to the message boards and people suggested various veggies as IF And I started slowly reincorporating them... I also started having milk... Ta da, problem 1) hasn't come back yet (thank God!)

I am saying this, because I remember reading you put flax meal in your morning oatmeal... maybe you are not tackling the problem as extremely as I did, or maybe you are, but don't know that you are not doing it right? Do you have a list of foods you eat like I do? And are you trying the divide and conquer approach?

Also, I believe the Lord has something to do with my recovery Thank Him!

HTH
Jerry

I'm still only taking 2 heaping teaspoons of NC every night, and about 3 teaspoons of acacia daily. I don't think i'm taking enough acacia, as some late evening gassiness has started to come back... I'm experimenting a bit to try to make that go away. I know I still need to eat more IF; that's hard for me!
