What do you do when soy is a problem food?

I can't take soy! My stomach reacts very poorly to soy (and to dairy and meats as well--fish is tolerable). Are there other substitues for dairy and meat I can try (I also keep Kosher--so shell fish is out). HELP!

The other protein foods I can think of are eggs (whites only, of course), beans, and wheat gluten. If you want to base a meal around egg whites as your protein, you could fix French toast with rice milk and egg whites, or an egg white omelette or scrambled eggs. Beans should be safe cooked thoroughly, mashed at least somewhat, and combined with soluble fiber. So, refried beans (homemade or fat-free canned), homemade bean soup mashed up, etc. Wheat gluten is a vegetarian protein substitute. I haven't tried it but it's supposed to have a "meaty" consistency--and it's soy-free. You can get it in the refrigerator section of some supermarkets, already marinated--you could try it in a stir-fry with some safe, thorougly cooked vegies, and serve the whole thing with lots of rice. Best of luck!!!

Oh, and nuts--can you have low-fat peanut butter? How about finely ground nuts incorporated into quick breads? Those would up your protein intake, if that's what you're worried about.

WOW! Thanks a bunch for all this info!!! What do you use to mash the beans--do you use any kind of beans or a particular kind? What's a good amount to eat when you first add it to your diet? (2 bites after a soluble fiber meal?) What ingredients do you use to make bean soup? That sounds yummy!

About peanuts and peanut butter, I'm not sure yet what I can and can't have I had my colonoscopy this past Thursday and I'm still awaiting the final results (my doc is 99% sure it's IBS). I've been on the basic foods only of Heather's diet for about 2 or 3 months now--but I'm still having pretty bad days (I'm guessing that if the stress is really out of control then diet may not be the solo answer?) If you have any suggestions I'd REALLY appreciate them! Thanks for everything TessLouise!!!

I am there with you. As you can tell from yesterday that I still have some bad days. Have you tried yoga? I was having a really hard time last winter and started doing yoga six days a week and I can't even begin to tell you how much better I felt. I am going to start doing it more regularly now.

My husband and I were evicted from our house six months ago because our landlord wanted his son to live in the house for free. We moved in with my parents while we started the process of building a house. Let me just state that building a house is so stressful. Add that to living with parents who don't try to understand my disorder and it is not the best health situation to be in. It really hasn't been that bad living with my parents again, they just don't understand that it actually is a disorder and not all in my head. So I haven't been exercising as much as I would like to. It is definitely a goal of mine.

I'm not really sure if I am helping you out or just rambling, but I really thank you for listening anyway.

I totally understand what you're going through, with building a house (yes very stressful) and the family's eating habits. My mother's idea of a good diet is only buying 2 containers of light (not non fat) sour cream rather than 3 at one time. She's coming to visit this weekend and I can't imagine what she's going to think of the way I eat. I plan to have nice, low fat meals, but also plan on getting a lot of criticism about them. The ironic thing is that she's overweight, claiming that no diet works. Duh, she has no clue as to what a low-fat diet really is. I wonder what she'll say when I tell her that the 2 TB of butter she just put on her potato has 22 grams of fat......lol. The American diet is so fat full and accepted these days it's no wonder we have so much heart disease. My husband says he'll probably live longer due to my new diet. His cholesterol already dropped 20 points. Now if I could just get him to stop eating candy and desserts at work........lol.
