In yesterday's (Sunday - 19 Nov) Parade Magazine there is an article by a doctor (page 21) that addresses a new medicine researched by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in which a 10-day course of treatment with the drug Refaximim can control IBS for 10 weeks. I intend to speak with my doctor about this treatment as he (among the few) believes in diagnosing IBS. The article also indicates that the drug has been in use for some time to treat "Traveler's Diarrhea". Has anyone heard of this before?

This has been discussed before, but I think it is called Rifaximin. Try doing a search for this and lots of posts will come up.

This is not a cure nor a treatment for IBS. It is a treatment for SIBO (bacterial overgrowth). You can be tested for SIBO and then if you have it, this antibiotic may help. It helps for traveller's diarrhea since this is caused by a bacteria. If you have IBS and not SIBO, then it most likely won't help, and may make things worse. Antibiotics are hard on the digestive system especially for someone with IBS.

Yes. There is a theory that some people diagnosed with IBS are actually suffering with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. There is a diagnostic test for this and if it's positive the idea is that you can be treated with antibiotics to cure the problem.

I just did a post about this in the Living Room: web page

Thanks, Kat & Sand - Since I have had IBS-D for only two years now I thought I had stumbled onto something new. And, you're right, Kat, it does end with an N not my mistyped M.
Next time I see my Doctor I'll ask for the SIBO test.
