I had food poisoning in July and Flagyl stopped the problem.
Since then I have been 50X more sensitive, especially to dairy that had not bothered me before so I am totally avoiding it.

I tried Questran about 2 weeks ago and it made me sick as a dog feeling full up to my tongue. Then I took some immodium so I could go to PT for my back not knowing what I was doing. Previously I have taken up to 12 immodium in a day and had a BM the next day not -C.

I felt constipated so instead of a suppository, I ate my first hamburger in 3 years and instead of D in 30 min, it took 12 hours.

I went to the GI doc yesterday and if I had had a gun with me I'd have shot him. He has a one track mind and if it is IBS it has no other components even though I have been having probs since they removed my GB and new probs since food poisoning..

The minute I started asking ?? about some of the medical research journals he told me he had no more time. Just stop Nexium, Celexa and take lactaid before each meal and wants a stool sample to look for parasites. All of the changes he made were the results of questions that I asked about meds causing D--he only wanted to talk about the old fashioned remedies---not even fibers.

I have had no protein in 2 weeks--even bought baby rice cereal and mixed it with applesauce for meals.

I am about to order peppermint caps and teas.

I am going to find a new doc who appreciates a patient with a brain. And who will listen to me and be at least a bit symphathetic.

I'm sorry you are so miserable!

I'm also sorry your doctor was so very unhelpful and wish you luck finding a good one!

I'm so sorry too to hear of your problem. 12 immodium!! I can't imagine how that would not stop d...do you mean you're taking them all at once or spread out across the hours? It definitely sounds like you need to find a good GI and quick for your sanity and health in case something else is wrong. Heather posts a list of good GIs somewhere on this site but I'm sorry, I'm not sure where. Hopefully you can find one in your area who will listen to you sincerely. Good luck.

Good morning G. I, too, have been very frustrated with my medical care. I've been sick since June...D, C, pain, bloating, trapped gas, low back pain, left hip pain. Had colonoscopy, 2 pelvic and abd USs, and CT of abd and pelvis. All is normal. I'm going back next week to regular IM doc. I'm going to demand a PET scan, which is much better than CT, US, and MRI for detecting serious medical conditions. It is hard to find a PET scanner, but if you live in or near a large populated area, you should be able to find one. Keep searching for an answer. Elaine

Vent all you want. I was struggling along with pretty bad IBS-D until I got a case of food poisoning at which point it went from pretty bad to total disaster. I tried Imodium and anti-spasmodics and it was like trying to stop a freight train with an orange traffic cone. I did get some relief from Elavil but I had to keep increasing the dose to keep getting the same relief and eventually I was simply too spacy to function. My tummy was okay but I couldn't get out of bed. Not very helpful

What finally got things back under control for me was following the EFI Diet very strictly. I cut out all the trigger foods and irritants, drank lots of peppermint tea, consumed little fat, and based my meals and snacks on SF. In fact, since I was D I was able to eat very, very little IF at all for quite a while. I also started an SFS - I like Acacia but there are a bunch of them out there. Just avoid Metamucil since you're D normally.

I'm sorry your doctor's not worth spit but unless you've already shot him, let him do his tests. They're good to have done anyhow and you can always take the results with you when you find a decent doctor. There's a thread about good docs - maybe you'll find one in your area.

HTH. Feel better!

Please look to the left. Towards the top, you should see a a link that says "IBS Diet & Recipes". Read all the info there.

Also, read the posts at the top of the board ("stickies"). You really need to read about Heather's Diet (a.k.a. "Eating for IBS" or EFI) before this board will make any sense!
