It seems that we all have varying degrees as to what will send us straight to the bathroom (IBS-D) but I have read several posts where some people think something they've eaten a few days ago could have triggered an attack. Can it really be that long ago? I've been trying to slowly add a few more things to my diet since I've been doing pretty well with the Acacia and eliminating trigger foods, but since the time span is unclear, I'm not always sure about what might have triggered a flareup. Actually, thanks goodness they are not full-blown flare ups but I've just been uneasy a few times and not sure how far back to look at what I've eaten. Does anyone know the physiological answer to this? thanks

The short answer is no -- to your last question, I mean.

I think 24-48 hours is typical for something to "catch up" to someone, based on normal digestion. However, I think for a D, particularly one who isn't too stable, it can be much faster.

While you're trying to figure out what bothers you, keep in mind that everything you ingest has a cumulative effect ... so if you eat something new on Monday and Wednesday, try something new on Thursday, and have an attack on Friday, it might not be because of Thursday's new food. It could be that M/W's new food wasn't safe after all and upset your stomach just enough that it got pushed over the edge by Thursday's food, which might have been safe enough on a normal stable stomach.

You can also keep a food/symptom diary where you write down everything you eat at what time and every symptom you have at what time -- some people have good luck identifying triggers that way.
