Hi, I wanted to try and take soy out of my diet to see if it makes a difference with my bowels and tummy. Can anyone tell me what they use in shakes for protein as a substitute - rice milk has no protein in it and almond milk has sugar. I usually puree a banana in a shake with soy milk for a protein drink. Anyway, it is hard to avoid soy when you are vegetarian as I use tofu and soy milk for proteins. Any help and suggestions at all would be great. Thanks, Debbie IBS-C

hemp protein powder, rice protein powder are good options
lots of pureed beans if you can handle them. if you eat eggs do egg whites as often as you like, seitan is also a great source of veg protein, also known as wheat meat it is essentially gluten flour made into a dough that has a meaty like texture and you flavour however you like.

I agree with the Rice Protein. I know at my local co-op they have little single serving packages of rice protein (some is flavored), and its pretty easy on the stomach. I tried it for the first time last week and wasn't bad.
Make sure the rice protein doesn't have lots of extra stuff in it.
Good luck!

What type of rice protein do you use? I have tried one and it was very chalky - is hemp protein tasty or chalky? What do you mix it into? What do you use on cereal or for shakes? Thanks.

At Miso's suggestion, I just bought a bottle of Nutribiotic Rice Protein Powder, plain flavor. It definitely has a taste, so you need to disguise it well! I mix 1 tablespoon into my morning smoothie, and add a sweetener like honey to help cover the taste of the powder. I can definitely tell a difference; I stay fuller much longer in the mornings now!

I think most protein supplements have a "taste" or are chalky. I put them in a smoothie as well, since there is plenty of other taste to help cover it. Just don' tput it too much that you can't drink it. I like the idea of starting off with just a tablespoon or somehthing small, not the whole serving that they suggest.
