Hi!

I've had problems with heartburn occasionally since my IBS-D got bad about a year ago. However I have been able to drink peppermint tea without problems although I have only had it once a day typically. Though now I did the BTC diet and had peppermint tea twice yesterday. It was fine. But then when I had it today after having eaten my SFS and two toasts with mashed banana it suddenly started burning in my chest and then I actually burped up a tiny bit of the tea. Does this mean I shouldn't drink peppermint tea? It's really bad if I can't since it seems to be working for the bowels. The burning feeling was only intense for a minute or so and then decreased. Could it be that I take the tea better when I've had more food before it, i.e. if I for example have it in the afternoon after having breakfast, lunch and a snack, rather than if I have it with breakfast?

Have you switched to a different brand of peppermint tea? People here have commented that Heather's peppermint tea is WAY stronger than stuff they've bought at grocery stores. I used to drink peppermint tea several times a day just fine, but the peppermint capsules gave me pretty bad reflux. Now, even altoids can bother me.

I think it is entirely possible that the peppermints affect can alter depending upon how much food you have in your tummy. I have acid reflux and my reaction to peppermint does flucuate. I defintely can't take the peppermint capsules. Tea has been tolerated but not always. I just found out the hard way that Gas-X has peppermint oil too, so be careful with that if you take it.

No, I haven't changed the brand. I use Pompadour tea. (Though it's possible I might have left the tea bag in a bit longer than usual... Hmmm...)

Strange that you could drink the tea but not take the capsules since they are designed to be more tolerable...

I have no idea! But I never drank Heather's peppermint, just Celestial Seasonings, which is probably not nearly as strong. Guess the enteric coating isn't enteric enough for me!

I guess I was also going through some stress when the reflux started, and I was on prozac, which I thought was acidy - I can remember burping more than once after taking a dose. But even after I got off the Prozac, I tried the capsules again and just couldn't do it! I was disappointed, because I think they helped during the short time I took them.
