Hi everyone-
I have IBS-C. Tried Heather's acacia fiber and tummy tamers- it does not work for me. Zelnorm was a disaster. Does anyone take a safe medication for C? I don't want to take laxatives as it can cause permanent damage to the colon.
I appreciate all your input.
Thanks everyone

ground flax seeds, 2 tbsp in the morning works well or fibersmart by renewlife which is flax and borage seed with some tummy taming herbs. One thing that worked really well for me for a while, that i stopped taking cuz i was sick of ordering it over the internet was colonix fiber by dr natura, it has flax and psyllium, but was ok for me and some taming herbs, but also some help you go herbs, might be worth a shot.

How much Acacia were you taking? Maybe you just didn't get up to a high enough dose? Or, was it making you worse with gas/bloat/C?

You could try magnesium. Natural Calm is a good magnesium supplement for C, I think.

Miralax is suppose to be a safe, long term use "laxative" if you decide you need to go that way.

So far, the Natural Calm is working pretty well for me. Regarding flax seeds, do you need to start small and work up in dosage? Can you buy these in bulk at a HFS?

buy the ground flax seeds at the hfs that are kept in a vaccum pack in the fridge or they are not very useful. yes do build up to the 2tbsp slowly, start at 1/2 tsp and go from there.
you can take as much as you want until it gives you d, then you back off. with severe C you can easily do 2tbsp morning and night mixed in water, it won't dissolve but kinda gels a bit. Good luck, if it works for you it is great since it is cheaper than most fiber supplements and it gives you healthy omega oils, a fish oil supplement also helps with C as well as being soooo good for the rest of your body and brain it also lubricates the intestines.

Thanks for the info! Perhaps I will give this a shot. I'm also currently taking Acacia and Natural Calm - can I keep taking both while I'm taking the flax seeds?

Are ground flax seeds different than taking a flax oil supplement? Is one better than the other?

I'm glad this is helping you!! Do you take it everyday? How much? I'm still experimenting with the dosage.

yep you can taken em all together, just go slow with the flax since it is 50/50 soluble insoluble, but that is why it works so well. Ground flax seeds are the fiber part with some oil, but very little, flax seed oil will do along the same lines as the fish oil i suggested for lubricating the intestines and helping with any inflammation. but fish oil is easier used by the body.

Is straight flax oil good to take? Or is it too high in fat?

Is it helping? Let me put it this way: between yesterday morning and today, I lost almost two pounds!! yeah, it's helping! I felt so unbelievably FAT yesterday... I started with just 1/2 teaspoon at night a little over a week ago. I wanted to start slow since I already take a daily calcium/mag supplement. That made me kinda gassy, so I increased it, and I'm now up to 1 heaping teaspoon at night. It helps me sleep through the night, too, which I hadn't done in about six weeks!! I'm so grateful for the recommendation for this stuff!

Which do you think works better for C/gas/bloating: the ground flax seeds, or flax oil supplement pills?

you sorta need both, one lubricates the other gels since its fiber, as i mentioned before i would use ground flax seeds and fish oil capsules, not flax oil, since the fish oil is beneficial to every other part of your body as well and is super for inflammation, brain function, preventing arthritis, etc, so for most bang use fish oil capsules and ground flax seeds. you want 1000mg of fish oil and 2-4tbsp (build up till you get desired results) of flax seed per day

Thanks again! I will look for the flax seeds this weekend (one thing at a time!). Perhaps I will try blending them into my morning smoothie... is that okay?

I actually bought two bottles of liquid oil. One is flax and one is fish oil. They contain 14 mg oil per T, I think. Is the liquid oil not safe? I thought this would be better than the capsules since it doesn't contain nasty additives and gelatin.

Good question. They're not quite what I'd like them to be. They still come out more like little balls rather than one smooth, continuous BM. But at least they aren't hard and dry like they typically are with C.

Yeah, it's not perfect yet, but at least I'm GOING again!

I tried a plain-jane cal/mag supplement for awhile before the Natural Calm, and it just didn't do anything for my C and made me gassy. Not sure what's different about this stuff, but it works much better. Perhaps it's a more gentle formulation?

oh, i had quite a different experience with the cal/mag. i had a bm (sorry for the graphic explanation that follows) that didn't make it into the bowl, really. i had to use a roll of toilet paper. i don't want that to happen again and i'm scared to use it. i hope the calm won't have the same effect.

All I can say is, it has been an amazing help to me. Today's BM was even closer to "normal"! BUT - start with a small dose. The bottle says one dose is 3 teaspoons! I would start with 1/2 teaspoon and work up from there. When the dose was too small for me, I noticed I got gas. I think maybe it wasn't enough to get things "moving" so gas built up. Once I started increasing, things started "moving." I'm now pretty comfortable at 1.5 t. However, I also take a calcium supplement daily that contains magnesium.

I think so. I mean, typically gas is caused when things aren't moving "fast enough", right? So I think the NC sort of speeds things through a bit. My gas isn't completely gone, but it has certainly decreased. But I'm not sure that's directly due to the NC. I'm also doing the hypno CDs right now. My spasms have GREATLY decreased since starting the diet; no relation to the NC.

Hi Lisa, what calcium supplement do you take? I will be trying Natural Calm soon but I'd also like to take a CalMag supplement as well. If you can recommend one, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

How long did you try taking the acacia? It's not a quick fix and can take a C person several months, perhaps a year to stablize.

Regarding flax seeds - they should be ground flax seeds to help with C. I buy a vacuum packed preground organic package and put it in the fridge or freezer upon opening. Ground flax seeds should be keep cool. If you want to grind your own then a coffee grinder works really well. I started with 2 tbsp. per day as per advice from my specialist although looking back I think that I should have worked up to that. Debbie, Ontario Canada

I just buy a basic calcium supplement that also contains magnesium. I buy it at my HFS, and I think it's Country Life brand or something like that. I just make sure it's vegetarian and doesn't contain lactose or anything. Other than that, it really doesn't matter! I think my multi has ~600 mg of calcium, so I take another 500 mg via supplement. I can't remember how much magnesium is in the supplement. I do know that I have to take a pretty high daily dosage of magnesium in order to maintain regularity, though.

I just started Natural Calm 3 nights ago. I'm IBS-C (except for the occasional severe cramping when EVERYTHING comes out at once)and it worked really well the first morning after but I also felt really tired and nauseous in the morning after. The next 2 days I felt better but no B.M. My question is do I need to continue taking my Citrucel capsules along with the Natural Calm?

I would certainly keep up with everything else you're doing, including your SFS; I am using both natural calm and acacia. They do two completely different things.

Are you taking the natural calm every night? How much? You may need to increase.

Yes, I am taking the natural calm each night.......last night I upped it back to the 1/2 tsp - actually a tad more and then this morning - HOLY CRUD - I went "potty" 4 times before I left for work!! They were all formed but felt like diahrrea when I was going - I know - GROSS.......sorry. So now I'm afraid to take it tonight. Sometimes I think all that "supplement" stuff is for the birds - just another way to make money of us "desparate" ones.

Wow - only 1/2 teaspoon did that? Well, that's a good thing! That means you don't need that much to maintain regularity. I wouldn't be afraid of it; just try a smaller dose and see what happens!

Last night, after two days of C, I finally upped mine to 3 teaspoons. It took until 2:30 this afternoon for me to "feel better"! At least it works. I find it way more pleasant than Milk of Magnesia!
