I've noticed that probiotics come in different strengths. How much is too much? Can they aggravate D? What's a good brand? And how does Acacia become a probiotic...at what dosage? Thanks!

Acacia is not a probiotic - it's a PREbiotic. As I understand it, that means it provides a welcoming environment for good gut bacteria. Sort of like putting out seed if you want birds in the yard.

One health food store owner told me that some differ in strength because many of them die along the road to your intestines. It's best to get one that has enteric coating where is doesn't dissolve until it gets to your intestines where it goes to work. If you do take too many does in the beginning you may get very gassy, and some cramps.

Hi Digby,
Definitely look for one (like Gracie suggested) that is enteric coated so it will survive stomach acids and make it to your intestines.
Probiotics are actually supposed to help with D, once your body acclimates. I have found that if I take too much I get gassy. The only one that ever caused me D and cramping was Primal Defense. From what I gather on here, it seems to help a lot of people though, so perhaps it's just me. However, I noticed that a lot of the people who find relief with that one are C.
I have used Primadophilus and Flora-Q, once daily, and have found both to be great.
