Do the two books, eating for ibs and the first year, explain how to do an elimination/detection diet to identify trigger food?

No, from what I remember they recommend keeping a food diary. (anyone care to correct me? Heather?)
The advice is the same as the advice on the boards here, just in more detail.

I started with the What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything foods and slowly (about 1 per week) added in new foods. If something doesn't sit well with me I'll try it once more, at least a week later. If it still bothers me, it's out. It took a while to get through everything I eat but it was worth it. I'm stable now.

i don't believe so. but if you eat all the foods that are "safe" for awhile...then start to add back in normal foods, i've learned what i can and can not eat...i found it very helpfull. the pain, bloating, i got regular again. it helped me a lot!
