hi all. I just found this website today while searching for some tips on IBS-C. I'm fed up with my doctor because I don't feel like I'm getting any answers. She "thinks" I have IBS but said there is not much she can do for me. Is it possible to be born with IBS? I'm 28 years old and have had horrible stomach aches, bloating, cramping etc. ever since I can remember. I can't count how many times I rocked myself to sleep as a little girl. I have constant bloating and pain where it is almost a little hard to breath. Does anybody else have that? I'm constipated all the time!! and have cramps and gas all the time as well. On occasion, I do have the IBS-D, but for the most part it's the constipation. I read here that Coffee is bad for IBS. However, Coffee seems to be the only think that helps me go! If I don't drink coffee, my constipation is worse. I seem to have all the symptoms of IBS, however, how do you really know? could it be Lactose-intollerant? I guess i'm just a little frustrated that nobody seems to have an answer. hopefully the tea amd fiber will help! it will be my first time taking anything for my condition. I'm so so frustrated and so tired of feeling sick all the time. I'm sure you can relate! =)

I think most everyone on here would agree from personal experience, that if your current doctor is not doing his/her best to rule out other causes before arriving at an IBS diagnosis, then you should find someone who will. IBS is only an acceptable diagnosis once all other possible causes are ruled out. This usually involves blood testing, a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, to name a few of the tests.
I do think it's a good thing you're modifying your diet and taking fiber in the meantime as it can't hurt, but you really need to make sure what you are suffering from is IBS and not something else before you settle on that as being the problem.
Find a good GI. Perhaps let us know where you live and there might be another board member who can make suggestions as to good doctors in your area!

hi there...i drink coffee too. i'm ibs "c" and it helps me. ask your doc about zelnorm. it sure helped me. it's not something that you take forever though. so far i'm ok that i'm off of it. also, the heather diet helped me A LOT!! i followed it pretty strict for about 3 weeks and felt normal again. i was on it for 4 months (www.zelnorm.com) i take fiber and flax seed pills 3 times a day and it seems to help. i'm going to try PRIMAL DEFENSE as well. that's a priobiotic that some of the "c"ers recomend...good luck! everyone in here is very helpfull.

thank you so much for your input everyone! I don't know how many times I've told her my stymptoms. she says "well if you have some C and some D then the pills won't really help" (because occasionally I do get the IBS-D) but I am going to see a specialist ASAP as you are right, I should rule everything else out and have a real doctor tell me exactly what is wrong with me. I've been suffering all my life, and I think it's time I get some answers! I live in San Diego, CA zip code 02131

You're in the right place. This is a good general discussion board for IBS. If you want to discuss things that aren't related to IBS, go over to the Living Room. I used to live in SoCal (Orange County). Now I'm in Oregon and I miss the palm trees.
I with everyone else on this. You need a new doc, a good GI, and some tests done pronto to confirm IBS as a diagnosis.
