I went to a Naturopath and he told me to eat beans like lima, lentil and black eye peas. He says they are safe and will help me with C. If you guys know more about it, I would appreciate the info.... Thank you, Abi

I don't know about others, but I have started adding them back in. I like the Amy's meals like her chili because there is a serving of rice in with it and corn bread. I also take beano first, I figure what the heck, it can't hurt. Yes, I get gas but it seems like "normal" gas not the hurtful gut twisting kind of gas. I think you just have ot get brave and try. Seems like I need at least 25 g of fiber a day. To get a big bump in fiber I need something like that to get me there, even taking supplements. I'd sure only do it with pasta or rice as a good base and you might just add in a bit at a time. I also started adding back in quick cook veggies. My local supermarket takes their veggies and cuts the leftover produce up, mixes it together and packages it for stirfry. It's nice because there is such a variety. You could take the veggies that you know you tolerate well and cut them up and mix together and store them in a big gallon zip lock bag in the fridge. You can also steam them above your rice if you have a rice cooker with a tray. I personally feel like I am getting a better "nuturition spectrum" that way and I also don't seem to need much if any seasoning with the inherent flavor mixture! It is fantastic. I just toss some of it in a hot pan and stirfry it. I always eat them last after my potato or rice. It seems to be working. I am going every day again now (that is what is "normal" for me. Have always gone mostly everyday.) and I am adding mixed fresh fruit in too. But always after oatmeal or my other soluble fiber.
The best thing about this for me is that it has gotten me back in the kitchen experimenting. Two jobs has had me eating much too conveniently and that has not been good on me, my pocket book or my stress level. It's very pleasing to figure out new foods. My favorite quick meal right now is my turkey sausage (recipe on the recipe board) made into a three oz patty on the George Foreman with a little mustard sread on top, microwaved red potato (1/2 if big, whole if small, I refridgerate the unused half and have it the next day - you can do this for quick grabs too.) and the stir fried mixed fresh veggies.

Hi Abigail, Yes, he is correct. I eat all of those except for lima beans because of their taste. You can add chick peas to that list. I eat those the most because they are the least gassy. I saw another one of your posts. Your C symptoms are virtually identical to mine. -Bob

I eat beans almost every day. They are a great source of fiber and protein. They definitely help with C. I eat a lot of chick peas and pinto beans. Northern beans are pretty good too. I get canned beans, and the the Northern beans are quite mushy...easier to digest.

This is one of the foods that work for me too. I eat Lentils mostly. They're pretty easy to digest for the most part which is probably why they work so well for IBS-C.

Hello Bob,
Thank you for your message. I been eating the lentil beans and lima and they are ok for me. I want to try the black eye peas next. I was told I was IBS-c in Feb 2005 and that 1st year was the worst ever. I didn't know nothing about IBS until then, but the pain was so strong that I had to quit my job and haven't been able to go back to work since. I feel somewhat better but not good enough to be able to do the things I used to, like working outside the home. My BM are daily now, but not normal. I feel as if my bowels are always moving and upset. Thank you for the good info and help you can offer.
Blessings, Abi

Hi Abi, Boy, oh wow are our stories similar. I was diagnosed IBS-C in Feb.2005 too, and my first year was dreadful just like yours. At times, I didn't think I was going to make it. I too could not work. Fortunately, I had enough accrued sick time to cover the semester I had to take off from teaching. Now, I have daily BM's in the morning, but not normal, just like you. Recently, they've gotten better though, except for travelling this weekend, ugh. Ok, right now I'm doing about 25 grams of Miralax per day, and I'm on 37.5 mg of Paxil(an SSRI).For breakfast, I have a 1/4 of a grapefruit and a bowl of oatmeal with about a 1/4 cup of dried blue- berries in it, and 12.5 g's of Miralax in 8 oz of apple juice. After that I lift weights and do 75 situps. The situps seem pretty key because I usually have a complete clearing BM within an hour of doing them. I swim at noon and do about 20-25 laps. This helps a lot too. It really helps settle my stomach. Right after that I eat lunch which is an apple followed by a small salad with a good amount of IF in it. I typically put a couple of tablespoons of chick peas in it. Then a soy yogurt, oatmeal cookie(or 2:)) and a 12oz cappacino to wash it down(I cheat a little bit ). I typically eat dinner around six. I start off with a piece of french bread then a main entree of chicken(or fish) and brown rice with some additional IF in it. Then a little dessert. I don't drink a whole lot of water during the day, about 48 oz. There's no need to drown yourself like others say. Well, there you have it. If you try my strategy, let me know how it works. -Bob

Hello Johnny,
I posted a message earlier today thanking you for your message yesterday, but it's not in the board anymore. Thank you for taking the time to try to help me. I have an appt. with my GI doctor tomorrow, the last time I saw him(6 months ago)I was having bad C but not now, at least I don't think so. As I said before I have a BM every morning, but my bowels never relax, always upset and gets very painful. I'm thinking of writing down all I eat in my daily diet and show it to the Dr. Maybe there is something I'm eating that's causing the problem. Sometimes I feel that I'm eating too much IF in my daily diet and that's causing me pain all the time. I don't know, I'm so confused and frustrated. Do you or anybody else know how much IF an IBS-C should eat daily?? I want my pain to stop, but I don't want to get C...it's so scary. I know I need to eat enough IF to have a BM daily, but how much is enough, I'm not sure. I would appreciate the help and the info, please and thank you.
Blessings, Abi

I'm dealing with a bit of C right now, and I found that the key was keeping my SF high while adding IF. I thought I needed to cut back on my acacia, but doing so just made me crampier and no less C. I moved back up to my regular dosage (2 heaping T) and felt *loads* better.
I eat some IF with every meal, mainly raw fruit and wheat bread. However, that's not sufficient to eliminate (hee!) C - I need to also exercise regularly and do hypno or yoga.

Hello AC,
Thank you so much for your message. I do eat lots of IF and I have a BM every morning, but I think I might need to add some SF because my stool is very loose sometimes and my intestines are always upset, irritated and very painful. But I don't want to add too much SF because I did that last year and got worst with C. I haven't found the right balance and the pain it's driving me crazy. Can you give an example of what kind of food do you eat that keeps you regular??? Thank you so much for the help and info. I have an appt. with my GI doc today, let's see what he says. Blessings, Abi

I've found that just modifying my diet and doing nothing else does not make my C go away. Eating Heather's diet helps loads - no more week-long D attacks - but it's not sufficient (as her books point out).
I need to exercise regularly, and more than just walking. I need to do hypno or yoga or some sort of directed relaxation regularly. Yoga twists also help loads, even if I'm just doing them while seated at my desk. Heat helps get things moving, whether it's just hot weather or sitting in the steam room, or just lying around with a heating pad (or cat) on my belly. And making sure that I'm always sipping on something really prevents bloating for me.
So it's not just food. You have to do a lot of things, but they're all really good for you to do even outside of keeping your colon in line. All I do with food is avoid the real triggers 95% of the time (with the occasional slip for some really good cheese or buttered toast), take enough acacia so I'm not cramping up, and have some IF (preferably fruits & veggies) with every meal. Everything else deals with managing stress and not being too sedentary.
