I am IBS -C and I started Miralax this past Friday. I had been pretty stable with occasional twinges here and there but no regular BM. In typical "me" fashion, I decided to take 1 scoopful (17gm) twice a day instead of once a day, in hopes it would help faster. Sunday (yesterday) I started with all my IBS symptoms in full force - bloating, gas pains, horrid gas but with diarrhea instead of constipation.
I know that Miralax can cause diarrhea and I am hoping I just took too much. I stopped the Miralax yesterday but was wondering how long I should wait for the diarrhea to subside if it was caused by the Miralax?
Any thoughts?

I've been on Miralax for a couple months now, and my uneducated guess is that you probably did take too much to start ... especially since your system wasn't used to it. From what I understand, it used to be and/or is still used by some doctors as a bowel prep for procedures like colonoscopies, so it makes sense that if you put too much into your system all at once you'd experience symptoms similar to those we all endure doing a bowel prep.
I also had the bloating problem for about the first week on Miralax, but it did finally subside, and now I'm back to my usual intermittent bloating which probably has very little to do with the Miralax.
Keep the faith! I'm IBS-C among other things, and Miralax has really made a big difference for me. I tolerate it much better than fiber supplements, and it definitely keeps me regular (as in, daily).
Good luck to you.

Thank you for your reply. As soon as this diarrhea is resolved, I will start it again at a much lower dose. I am so happy it has worked for you - we all need to hear success stories!

when i first started w/ibs symtems....that's what the doc put me on...1 scoop didn't work. actually, it didn't do ANYTHING!! so he told me twice a day...like what you are doing. and still nothing. it never worked for me. the only thing that has taken care of the "c" is zelnorm and the heather ibs diet...talk to your doc about zelnorm.
