A bunch of crazy questions from a newbie

Hi everyone. I am trying to slowly to come to terms with this condition. After a series of horrific attacks I finally decided that this is for real and is not just going to go away. I suffer from the gamut of symptoms: diarrhea in the AM the usually gas, bloating, and constipation later in the day. Like a rollercoaster!
I am cutting down to just soluble fiber plus fiber supplements. Then I thought I would slowly try things and figure out what the triggers are. So far, so good, after two days.
I feel a million times better but my question is: when will I ever have a bowel movement again? Things are so calm it seems weird (especially because I am used to constant trips to the bathroom all day long). I am sort of fearful of developing a terrible blockage or something.
Also, the fennel seems like a great thing, but has anyone ever heard of just chewing the seeds? I know they are probably loaded with insoluble fiber but it is easier than making tea all the time.
Also, this forum and Heather's books are life-savers! When I was diagnosed I was told to eat more bran and insoluble types of fiber. Can you imagine the agony I suffered after eating a big 'ole bowl of Fiber One cereal? It is hard to believe that the medical community is so ill-informed!
Thanks everyone!

Crazy newbie! JUST KIDDING! What I really mean to say is welcome to the boards... glad you found us, sorry to hear you've got this dumb disorder too.
You will have a BM again, honest. You're only supposed to do the all-soluble diet for a few days, and then you gradually - one at a time - start adding insoluble fiber foods back in. It might take a little while, but your system will normalize.
Most every Indian restaurant I've ever been to has a dish of fennel seeds, for guests to chew on after their meal - so it's definitely not unheard-of. I'm not sure about the soluble fiber content, nor do I have any idea how many you'd have to chew on to get the same benefits as a cup of tea. Hopefully someone else will have a better idea of that for you.

Don't worry - you won't get a blockage just by stopping cramping and D! Anyhow, this might be your body's signal to start adding in IF - homemade fruit smoothies might be a good way to start. There's a bunch of recipes over on the IBS Recipes board. Exercise is another good way to keep things moving along.
I love the candy-coated fennel seeds you can get in Indian restaurants, but it might be a wee bit harsh for you if you're just getting started. You could always make up a big batch of fennel tea and keep it in a thermos if you get tired of making it by the cupful.
