I've been wrestling with what I suppose is IBS for nearly 10 yrs...I've tried sooo many different diets, approaches...have had respite for periods of time and then it comes back. I'm trying Heather's approach with diet & even acacia fiber but still am gaining weight, having diarrhea and extreme amounts of gas & bloating & discomfort....I feel like I am at my end. Any sense of how long this may take or what else I can do? Does anyone know of a connection to hormones? I think an endicronologist is my next step as things get worse near my period...I'm just reaching out...thanks.

Hormones definately play in to IBS and things are always harder to maintain for me around my period. BC helps that a lot. There have been other postings on here before that you can search for and read about. Have you been diagnosed by a GI with IBS? There are many exams and tests that need to be done to rule out other things. Generally, to my knowledge, people with diarrhea as a symptom usually lose weight rather than gain weight because everything passes through their system before their body is able to absorb what it needs. It takes everyone a different amount of time to stabilize on this diet. It took me 2 years to get completely stable. Give it time and the diet has to be followed strictly until you are stable.

thank yoU! I have been to numerous doctors and have ruled just about everything else out. I may see an endocrinologist. I'm at a loss because I do stick with the diet and continue to gain weight. Thanks!

I wouldn't wait to see anybody that you think can help you with this. It's such a pain to live with (mentally and physically) and anything we can find to better it is worth the time spent. Hopefully someone else will have some better ides for you. Sorry I'm not more help.

How long have you been trying Heather's diet?

If you're gaining weight you might have insulin resistance which means you need to find low glycemic foods including soluble fibres.

Have you been regularly exercising, and have you tried Heather's Tummy Teas? Other store brands don't have the high volatile oil content her's has so you won't the the best benefits out of the fennel and/or peppermint.

hi thanks! What foods would help ne if I have insulin resistance? I've followed heather's diet but unfortunately am supposed to avoid mint tea as I also have something called Barrett's Esophagus - so I have to avoid peppermint and chocolate and caffeine (the last 2 are probably good things to avoid anyway!). I exercise 4-5 times a week - run, aerobics, weight lifting - I've always been athletic so this is extremely maddening. I'm suspecting maybe some adrenal deficiency but don't know how to diagnost it - my TSH levels came back 'normal' but that is according to a GI guy I saw - I may make an apt. with an endicronologist...just wonder how much hormones would give me all this very painful gas, diarrheam, bloating, and weight gain though! Thank you for any any insights!!!!

Your IBS acting up near your period is pretty common, myself included. As for the weight gain, have you been to a endo? If your TSH comes back in the normal range then have them test your antibodies. My TSH was in the normal range yet I was putting weight on and so tired all the time. My antibodies were sky high and I learned I have Hashimoto's Disease. Your immune system attacks your throid gland. Sounds like me, you have more than one thing going on. Good Luck!

Some low glycemic SF foods are brown rice, oatmeal, buckwheat noodles, corn meal, quinoa, and barley. A nutritionist would have a more complete list, or you may be able to get more ideas from googling "low glycemic foods" or something like that.
