after I have had the camera down my throat (which is on 28th June), The specialist has said to me if it is clear he will discharge me. So what do I do then?

do I need any more checks other than the colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound scan on my ovaries and blood tests?

How do I go about getting reffered to a dietrician/ nutritionist (sps?)

and how about the hypnosis? do I just ask my doc...I hate wasting their time though, which i feel like i am always doing.

Is there anything else people can suggest trying? (apart from yoga...i`ve tried and just can`t do it )

anyhelp is appreciated, I`ve posted this in the living room too.

You can talk to your doc about hypnosis but I think it's mostly a waste of time. Hypnosis work wonders for a lot of people and even if it doesn't help, it certainly won't hurt any. Many people find that activities like Tai Chi and Meditation help them a lot. You just have to find something that you enjoy and is relaxing to you.

Hi Jo,

I had colonoscopy and gastroscopy, blood test and a pelvic scan and got the "all clear" from all. My Dr then said that it had to be "just" IBS as it was nothing else, no diseases etc, it was a functional disorder as opposed to a structural one.

He put me on antispasmodics to ease my tummy and advised me to keep a food diary to check what foods trigger me. He said that he has equal numbers of patients who are successful with very very high fibre diets as those who are successful on Heather's type of diet.

A month later, and having done Heather's diet for a month (although mostly the Breaking the Cycle part which I realise that I did for too long) and taking the Colofac I was still miserable so I went back to him. That time he gave me a low dosage of antidepressant(Citalopram) and took me off the Colofac. I was better in a matter of weeks after that. I stayed very strictly on the diet from August til Christmas and then I was more stable so got to cheat more and more.

If you have stress in your life try to eliminate it as much as you can or figure out an effective way of dealing with it.

I haven't tried the hypno but I know a lot of people, like Nat, AmandaPanda for example, are great fans.

That's my advice for the moment.

The camera down the throat is absolutely fine, nothing to worry about at all. How are you doing with the wheat, have you started to eat it again yet? How come they are making you eat it again?

If i have really bad spasms/cramps I take Buscopan tablets (they are over the counter and now are called "buscopan IBS Reflief") They really do ease my cramping, I got them on a very hungover day in Boots in Stanstead airport.

Re Colofac no they don't make it worst, they just didn't make me any better.

Funny that they MAKE you eat wheat to figure if you are intolerant of it! Two weeks of it is it?

Hope it all goes ok.

Yes it's odd. My coeliac's test came back negative but then I've been wheat free and, by default, almost gluten free, since October. I cut it out because it was suggested that wheat was triggering my migraines. (used to have one every 3 weeks, and have now only had one "mild" one since Oct!)

After I had the test I read up on it and realised that it would come back negative 'cause you have to be eating lots of wheat/gluten for the test to be valid. I don't think my doctor realised that.

I'm sure I'm not actually as I know I can have a little bite of bread or cake and get away with it and it's only if I "overload" that I get D or migraines. My friend does have it and gets an instant reactions if she has just the very tiniest bit.

Noticed that you mentioned you were on the "Breaking the cycle diet" and you said you thought you had been on it for too long. I have been on this since Sept. 05, and was told I should stay on it for 12 months after diarrhoea had ceased, which it hasn't. Would like to hear your comments about it, if you wouldn't mind. Thank you kindly.

PS: I think I have misread - I am talking about Breaking the Vicious Cycle Diet - book by Elaine Gottschall recommended by my naturopath. Sorry - has anyone used this diet???

...what I meant to say was that I think that I did the "what to eat if you can't eat anything" element for too long. I take it you are not on that for that long as it is very bland and only meant for very short term use.

I imagine you are on Heather's eating for Ibs diet maybe instead?

Right, here's my story: I was afraid to introduce new foods or any IF I think and didn't realise/acknowledge (until the blessed intervention of Casey) that it is really important not just to eat SF all the time and that your body needs IF too. Even adding a baked chicken breast made me feel so much better. I think if I had added chicken and turkey etc sooner I would have felt better sooner.

I'd did a 100% safe absolutely no triggers or irritants (to see what I mean check this page) for about three or four months. I definitely recommend this to stablilise but don't stay on the "What to eat when you can't eat anything" for too long at a time, introduce some chicken or turkey or some peas etc. Definitely go back to it for a couple of days if you are having an attack etc.

Now that I am stable I cheat more. There are some triggers/irritants that I always avoid, caffeine, red meat.
There are some irritants that I have after SF and never on an empty tummy like some fried foods, or the occasional spoon of icecream, or some white wine or cider.

It takes everyone different amounts of time to stabilise, I was lucky, It worked for me within a couple of months, thanks to lots of peppermint tea, hot water bottles, exercise, antidepressants and following Heather's Diet to the letter.

If you have any more questions please ask.
