Can anyone explain the difference to me? My 10 year old daughter is very newly diagnosed and I'm trying to find foods that she likes, but are safe. She is also supposed to limit her sugar intake a little (because of a little excess weight, not diabetes). I love her very much and it's killing me to see her miserable as I tell her no, no, no.

Corn syrup contains mostly glucose while HFCS contains a higher concentration of fructose. Fructose is found naturally in fruits, but HFCS has a LOT of it.

Fructose is one sugar that can cause gas, but the amount found in fruits isn't a problem unless you have a fructose intolerance. However, since HFCS has such an unnaturally high concentration of fructose, it will cause more gas and other digestion problems. A recent study mentioned that it may even alter your rate of metabolism.

I don't know that much about corn syrup, but I think it contains some fructose as well. I would say to consume products containing corn syrup in moderation or in limited amounts. I hope someone else who knows more about it will jump in here and offer some more info.

HTH! I think it's really great that you're trying to help your daughter and husband by eating healthier, IBS-safe meals.

Thanks Maria. I actually feel pretty ashamed that she's been going through this for so long and I didn't know about it. I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago, but mine only seems to flare up with high stress and rich ice cream. My husband has it as plain as the nose on your face, but won't admit it. He's too sensitive to the jokes made about it on t.v.... We would all just laugh about my daughter's occasional (so it seemed to us) gas and she thought it was funny until she started getting older and it's not funny anymore. She started talking about how often she goes to the bathroom (poop, 4-6 times a day ibs-a) and gas a lot especially at school and at night. I was shocked and very disappointed in myself for not putting the pieces together sooner. To make matters worse, she has to go to her dad's for two weeks every two weeks in the summer and they probably won't do anything about it. Wow, i guess i needed to vent. sorry... Anyway, yes, I'd like to understand more about the corn syrup thing and also about how much sodium if anyone knows about that. Also, is there a place that lists how many grams of soluble, insoluble, protein, calcium, etc. she should have per day? Thanks!

Dr. Perricone has also warned against HFCS. In addition to the IBS problems it can cause, it will cause obesity, and is bad for your skin.

If you're looking for syrup for pancakes etc. Instead of using the Aunt Jemima stuff from the store, use real maple syrup...organic if you can find it. I hope your daughter feels well soon.

I have heard that fructose blocks a receptor in the brain that tells you your full and leads to the obesity Gracie mentioned.

high fructose corn syrup has much more fructose then regular corn syrup. long-term imbalance of fructose to glucose may contribute to obesity or diabetes but for now, in general it just isnt good for your body to have so much of that stuff. in addition to foods containing HFCS, you also must look out for other preservatives such as sorbitol, mannitol, silicates and any other word you may not be able to pronounce; and color additives too. many of these cause common allergies and bodily upsets. id say the best thing to use is unprocessed, unbleached organic sugar and treats that use it or cane sugar. that way you know youre getting the most pure food which will help you get closer to identifying your triggers. good luck--i hope your daughter feels well again soon
