Hi to all, I wanted to introduce myself and thereby feel less the "lurker" I can hardly believe I've FINALLY found an IBS website that offers helpful information on diet that makes sense. My name is Diane and I've lived with this condition for at least 10 years now, though it became much more severe after the birth of my daughter 7 years ago. For whatever reason this past year, and especially the last 6-8 months have been a real treat. I've lost 39lbs. without effort, that is the extent of my daily suffering. Does diet impact IBS? humph. Let's just say that without monitoring my diet I would be unable to leave the house. And the pain, well the pain sure doesn't make all this any more enjoyable. I'm off to shop tommorrow for Heather's book as looking up all these things I remember seeing is getting to be too much. Because fasting to get my body under control has long been my trick of choice, that is my next step. I would never in a million years have thought adding a "fiber therapy" would be beneficial I can hardly wait! My first question to the group is this: should I begin the fiber with the fast, or afterward? I generally fast 2-4 days depending on the severity and duration of my symptoms and right now, it's bad. I look forward to the end of the fast and trying some recipes that might just stick with me! Thanks for listening and more importantly, for being here at all. Diane

Hi Diane,

Welcome to the boards!!! First I would recommend not fasting. Not eating is a no-no for IBS!! I would do Heather's stabilizing diet for a few days...safe foods to eat when you cant eat anything.www.helpforibs.com/diet/what_to_eat.asp click on this and you can see all the food's to eat for a few days to get back on your feet. Drink lot's of water and try the teas..such as peppermint, fennel, ginger etc! Herbal teas. I would do this over a fast. Your body needs food. It gets worse when empty!!! So I would try this before a fast. Do get her books and look around on the web page and the differnt posts. You can learn so much on this site!!

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

PS...my IBS got worse after my last baby too...darn
kids

Steph

Hi and welcome to the boards!

First of all, I have to say fasting is a BAD idea! Heather explains it in The First Year. I think it is something to the effect of if you don't have something in your colon, it doesn't give the muscles anything to 'grip' causing spasms and pain. I THINK that's how it goes. I'm sure Heather will correct me if I'm wrong. Here's a past post on fasting by Heather: web page

The best thing for you to do is Break the Cycle. This includes beginning a fiber supplement.
