Should I go to the specialist even tho i feel abit better?

Hi. I've just got thru an appointment to see a specialist after nearly a year of angst! Only thing is I recently cut out grains as well as dairy and I'm alot better, although by all means not cured! Should i still go or should i just decline and deal with it myself? I don't want to be probed? Any one know what they do???!!

I would go. This is your health you are dealing with. It may be "just" IBS or it could be something else perhaps more serious. No, getting the 'scopes done isn't the happiest experience (the prep can be the worst part), but they rule a lot of things. GO!

I'd go for a number of reasons:
- As Snorkie says, you really need to know for sure if this is IBS so do the tests and then you know once and for all.
- Also, if you feel better since eliminating grains from your diet, I really think you need to be tested for celiac - this is nothing to mess around with (as we all know from this week's episode of "House").
- A specialist can help with prescription meds like anti-spasmodics if you need them.
- Once you're a specialist's patient it should be relatively easy for you to get back in to see him again if you need him in a hurry. If you're a new patient when you need help fast, you will probably have to wait longer.

not to be pessimistic but what if your feeling good streak should end? then you would have to wait another year to see a specialist. I would go anyway, tell them what has helped you, what you are and have struggled with. They might need to do tests to make sure IBS is in fact what you have.

When I went to my specialist this is what he did:
1. Took all my history, had a chat, did a tummy exam (hands, stethoscope on tummy)
2. Referred me for a colonscopy (camera through the rectum) and and
3. Gastroscopy (camera down the throat) and
4. Pelvic scan (to check for ovarian problems etc)
The worst thing about it all was the colonoscopy preparation- you have to empty your bowels the day before by drinking horrible stuff and spending the day on the loo.

Don't worry, it's much better to have a correct diagnosis and work on it than not to know or to treat it wrong.
