Has anyone else tried this yet? My doctor had me start it on Friday. He said it was okay to take it while also taking Zelnorm because it works differently. I'm not sure that its doing anything, although its only been a few days, and I've been so messed up lately its hard to tell.

Is that the correct spelling? I haven't heard of it and tried to google it and didn't find anything?

I'm IBS-pain/bloating predominant as well. I'm doing to do more research on what you're taking. Was the Zelnorm not working for you? Is that why you're supplementing it? If you can find out, can you tell us how it's different from Zelnorm?

**I do apologize if Heather's already posted this info in the library. This is my first search for new IBS drugs in a while**

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I found something on this:
"Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America is currently planning a phase 3 clinical trial for Lubiprostone, a drug that may treat IBS-C. More than 500 patients will be enrolled in two phase 3 trials for the drug."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's another interesting link:

The drug is currently called: PTI-901

Hey Michele! Sorry I'm being dyslexic today. Its actually Amitiza, which is the brand name for Lubiprostone. On my rx leaflet it states, "This medicine is a chloride channel activator used to treat chronic constipation in adults by increasing mobility in the intestines".

Good luck with it! I'm glad that there are many drug options out there. When I first came to this board, there were ZERO drugs specifically for IBS.

I ran across this on their Web site:

In clinical trials, the most common adverse event was nausea (31%). Other adverse events (≥5% of patients) included diarrhea (13%), headache (13%), abdominal distention (7%), abdominal pain (7%), flatulence (6%), sinusitis (5%) and vomiting (5%).

SO not fair that some of the side effects (ab distention and pain) are some of my worst symptoms. I'd be worried to exacerbate them.

Let us know how it works for you!

Hmm, interesting. I'm not familiar with what a "chloride channel activator " does, I wonder if it works similair to miralax, which is an osmotic laxative? Either way, keep us posted on how it works for you!

Apparently, it draws fluids into the bowel by way of chloride. I also take Zelnorm and Miralax. My doctor says that the Amitiza works differently, and that its okay to take all three of them.
