Not sure if that's really the case, but it seems to be working. I have had terrible C since before Christmas (wierd bc I used to be more D). Anyway - last week I decided that I was going to try adding a smoothie to my diet every single day to see if that would help. Well let me tell you - I have never been more happy about BMs in my life!! I have gone almost every day since I started this! It must just be that I needed that extra IF dose! And for the most part they are normal stools - not too mushy and messy (TMI - sorry), but not too hard either. I am never ever ever going a day without a smoothie again!!!!

Now if I could only figure out how to get rid of this dang gas and bloat I would be all set!!!

I totally agree! I feel almost cured by my smoothie every night...it's amazing, isn't it? I guess it is all trial and error until you find what works for you...but for me, I am sticking with my smoothies!!!:)

What ingredients do you use? Do you eat it as a meal replacement? I've wanted to start drinking these too...but I can't figure out where to fit them in!

When do you drink your smoothie? I have been drinking mine in the morning - between breakfast and lunch. You mentioned you have yours at night and I am just curious if you have it before, after or with dinner....

Here is what I do....

For "breakfast" I have a 1/2 cup of applesauce with acacia and either toast or an english muffin. About an hour or two later I drink my smoothie. I use vanilla soy milk, strawberries, bananas and blueberries. And I try to remember to throw in another tsp. of acacia - but sometimes I forget. I drink it slowly, so it takes about a half hour to an hour before I am done with it (I make a big one - 16 oz. give or take).

My new mission is to get some some Light soy milk this weekend and try them with that.

Do you use frozen berries? How much of each? A whole banana?

Thanks!

I used frozen blueberries - maybe about 15 or 20 berries.

Strawberries - I bought a huge carton of them from Sam's Club and sliced them all up and froze them myself. I use about 1/2c.

Bananas - same thing - bought at Sam's club, sliced and froze them myself. I use about 1 banana.

I take what I am going to use out of the freezer about 20 mins before mixing the smoothie to let it thaw a bit - otherwise they are TOO frozen and end up staying in larger chunks.

Can you tell I just dump it all in and don't measure?

I'm actually looking forward to experimenting with other fruits, too. Melons sound fun! And pineapple....my freezer is getting low, so I'll probably get some different fruits this weekend.

I usually have mine at night, after dinner. It's sort of my before bedtime snack... I sometimes have it with dry cereal just as a bit of a buffer. But I like having it last at night, it fills me up and helps me go the next morning!

I use cranberry juice, about 6 strawberries, 4 ice cubes and a dash of sugar...if you can't handle the juice though, soy milk is just as good!:)

When I was stable, I made the best smoothies and they seemed to help me go.

1 container of Stoneyfield Farm yogurt
6 oz skim milk
1 scoop protein powder
1T ground flax
1T psyllium
1c froz fruit (strawberry, blueberry, mango)
1t peanut butter (optional)

I'm trying to avoid dairy, now, so I haven't had this in a while. I'm sure it could be modified, but I don't want to go out and buy all the stuff just yet. :0)

How long does it take you to "go" after drinking the smoothie?

I usually have a BM anywhere from an hour to 6 hours after drinking the smoothie. It has also taken until the next day a couple times. I've only been drinking these for a couple weeks, so I don't have a definite pattern just yet. I just know that I am having BMs and that is wonderful!!

I make them the night before and just keep it in the fridge in a thermos type bottle. Then I just grab the bottle in the morning on my way out and start drinking it around 9am. It seems to work ok. They aren't as good as if you drink them right after making them, but it's not bad either....

Beth, If you take a frozen one to work, it will defrost within
three hours, at which point you could drink it. -Bob

My smoothies are exclusively composed of fruit which varies depending on my mood, availability, the season, and obviously how my IBS is that particular day. I blend/puree it in the food processor. This is my breakfast if I decide to consume breakfast. I generally combine high IF fruits with SF fruits, i.e. strawberry/papaya or blueberry/banana or raspberry/mango. Often the berries I use are frozen. If I add liquid it is generally fresh lemon or lime juice, or water. However, I don't always mix/combine fruits. Sometimes I will have one fruit exclusively.

Kate, IBS-D.
