I'm in the process of being tested for diabetes, as I've been having many of the classic symptoms. I was wondering if anyone out there has diabetes, and how you manage both IBS and diabetes with diet? I can't eat so many of the products for people with diabetes as I simply can't tolerate artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols, and it seems like all the carbs I eat for the soluble fiber would be bad for diabetes.

I've been diabetic for a looong time, but only recently found Heather's book and eating plan. I also can't tolerate artificially sweetened anything, with the IBS. You have to walk a fine line with the carbs. Some will spike your sugar levels and some don't. For me personally, I can't eat a lot of bread or pasta or white rice because it causes high sugar. But oatmeal, potatoes (both white and sweet), beans, brown rice and cooked carrots don't cause high BG (blood glucose) levels, for me. I believe it's because those things have more fiber than white flour. Obviously, anything with high sugar in it causes high BG, but fruit doesn't. So I tend to eat "low" on the food chain, and stay as far away as I can from highly processed stuff because I just do better. You will have to find out for yourself what works for you. I'll tell you that in my pre-eating-for-ibs days, things that had high carbs & high fat really gave me high BG AND ibs-d. Pizza was the worst. I use an insulin pump, so I have to religiously count carbs, but you get used to it. Sometimes I hate it, but do it anyway, you know? Hope this helps, and good luck with the tests.
