My doctor is recommending a gluten-free diet. Is Heather' IBS diet similar? Have any of you done the gluten-free diet? I'm guessing I could do both (gluten-free and IBS diets), would that work?

I have not stuck to a particular diet, I just try to avoid certain things. What have you found on this? There are a lot of ideas at this site: Celiac Org.

If you do a search for "gluten" or "GF" you should find a lot of info. A lot of people have tried or are currently eating GF.
Why does the doctor want you to try a GF diet? Did he do blood work or is it just a trial?

The doctor wants me to try a GF diet because she has some other IBS patients who have had success with it.

Thanks. This was very helpful. I think I will ask my GI to test for CD just to rule it out. In the meantime, I'll do my best to stick to Heather's diet and a gluten-free diet.

View the message on this board from Augie (I believe) just under my first message about a gluten-free diet. I haven't started a gluten-free diet yet, but I'm seriously considering it. My doctor recommended it because she said she has some other IBS patients who have done well with it.

Wow, I wish it helped me. I currently eat GF because I have gluten antibodies when tested. Unfortunately, the gluten free diet hasn't helped.
I am finding it very difficult to follow a GF diet and the IBS diet. Gluten free products tend to have lots of fat in them because the substitue flours need the fat in order to bake properly. Also, many of the GF products contain triggers....like whole eggs, flax seeds, milk, etc.
Keep me updated on your experience with GF eating. If you have questions, let me know and I'll try to help.

if you follow the GF diet before you are tested, your test will be invalid. You must be eating gluten in order for the tests to be accurate.

Thanks. This is all so confusing. One doctor says one thing, another doctor says another (particular when it comes to hormones), one article says one thing, another article says another. What to do? I think I'll just start off with the IBS diet, then see what the GI says after I have my appointment with her.
