What side effects do you have from this? (Levsin) I took the .375 today and have dry mouth as always but also am exhausted and out of it. (And still a little queasy) I wonder if those are ibs symptoms or side effects. I guess it doesn't matter too much, but I'm curious.

I was going to post some questions about Levsin today. It is causing me terrible dry mouth, which is bad enough on its own, but it is also drying out my eyes something horrible. I had to take my contacts out half-way through the day today. I've also had funny headaches and perhaps some eye pain (I can't tell if it's headache or eye pain). I haven't had any nausea. That could be the IBS.

I don't think I'm going to take Levsin anymore.

I noticed in the ingredients on this medication that it contains some kind of sulfate. Is that the same kind of thing that's in sulfa antibiotics? I am allergic to sulfa drugs.

Does anyone know of an alternative to Levsin?

I also experienced dry mouth, dizziness / just feeling foggy-headed, having to urinate a ton, very sleepy and out of it. Honestly I've found that the peppermint caps have been at least as effective as the hyoscamine. My doctor also prescribed something with a P ... I can't remember the name. Anyway it didn't help either. For me the answer has been diet, peppermint caps, fiber, and de-stressing!

Oh, I would love to be off medication, believe me. Unfortunately, enteric peppermint caps give me extreme, mentholated d! I actually felt my insides turn to ice a little while after taking one. That was enough of a test for me and I havn't tried them again - it was about 8 years ago!

...I literally just walked in the door after seeing my new GI today who gave me a prescription for, you guessed it, Levsin. I guess I will give it a try anyway....

Its worth a try. If I use it before sleeping its fine. And it works really really well. Today I took it after lunch which is unusual so I was awake for the foggy headedness.

..... BUT the stuff did nothing to help my IBS, absolutely nothing. I'm surprised you're having side effects, because I'm usually very sensitive to drugs, and I had none from this one.

The only antispasmodic that works for me is Donnatal, and yes, I experience side effects from it; mostly I become lathargic and emotional, a kinda drugged-like state. When I have a bad attack that makes me reach for the Donnatal, I usually curl up in bed and "sleep it off."

Ain't this fun?!

The two kinds I take are IB-Stat, and donatal. IB-Stat is a hyosciamine spray that I take when I'm having a bad attack. It takes 2 pumps of the spray in my mouth to stop the attack in its tracks (like, almost instant relief!), but it gives me bad dry mouth too.

The donatal pills I take have hyosciamine, plus phenobarbatol in them. It's prescribed for me 3 times a day, and I take them before meals if I think I'm going to have an attack out on the town. I don't feel the phenobarb at all. Others have said it makes them dizzy or drowsey. I can take 3 at once and it doesn't do anything except give me dry mouth (and stop my spasms ).

I hardly take the pills any more because of the HORRIBLE dry mouth. The dryness is so bad I can't take them at night ever (not even one!), because my mouth feels like it'll never have spit in it again. And the dryness makes my tongue sore and swollen. Not fun.

But they work great with food for me, and during the day. Hope this helps!

...I figure a little dry eyes is nothing compared to some of the stuff I've tried (yes, like you, I've also fallen prey to the ancient art of "moxa", i.e. IBS patient as human torch)!

I don't know when I read it, maybe a few months ago. I was probably doing a search on something and it came up in that long and insanely hilarious list. The worst part is I think I have done about 1/2 that stuff too... man, the money we've spent...

How often do you take the donnatol? I have a prescription for it, but didn't think it was safe to take too often.

I got terrible dry mouth, and it's weird but it even dried out my chest! It itched all the time, with no rash.

Donnatal is dangerous because it can be addictive; it contains phenobarbital. I use it VERY sparingly, only when I have an attack AND the Equalactin doesn't help. I am only on my second bottle, yet I've been taking it for over 5 years now. I had to throw out an entire bottle because it had expired several year ago, so you can see how seldom I use it.

No, it's not intended for use every day; you would get addicted, so save it for those severe attacks only. Get yourself some Equalactin; it's perfect for mild rumblings. Hard to find, but still it's over-the-counter. If your local phamacist doesn't have it, he can order it for you. GREAT stuff. Do a search, and you'll see a lot of posts about it. Heather turned me on to it by sending me a sample with the first order I placed with her. It's mainly for "C"-ers, but works great for "D" folks, provided we take only ONE.

It's been prescribed for me 3x a day, plus the hyo... spray. I stop using it for weeks then pick it up again. Never had a problem.

There are some things I get addicted to right away, but this has never been one of them. I guess maybe I am the only one?

Not only is it addictive, but, according to my Funk & Wagnal's: "Donnatal is actually a combination of Atropine, Hyoscyamine, Scopolamine, and -- are you ready -- Phenobarbital."

Quote:

"Warning: special mental and physical adverse effects. Older adults are especially sensitive to the harmful anticholinergic effects of a family of drugs called belladonna alkaloids. Atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine are all in this family. Drugs in this family should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Mental effects: confusion, delirium, short-term memory problems, disorientation, and impaired attention. Physical effects: dry mouth, constipation, difficulty urinating (especially for a man with an enlarged prostate), blurred vision, decreased sweating with increased body temperature, sexual dysfunction, and worsening of glaucoma."

I take hyosciamine twice daily. My doctor called it Levbid, not Levsin. Anyway, I don't have any side affects at all and it has helped. It's not a miracle cure, but it does make a difference.

I will def keep my eyes open about this. It's funny, it's the one med I'm taking that I never have any problems with and that I (until now) was the least worried about becomming addicted to. Meds, great stuff. It's like the one thing you take them for is nothing compared to all the side effects!

Life would be so much easier if we didn't have to eat. That would solve so many of my pain problems!! (Of course, the side effects...!)

Thanks, Bevs!!

I am overly sensitive to meds and I do get dry mouth from it and when I take a higher dose (I can take up to 4 pills at a time per the doc) I get drowsy and out of it... even a low dose makes me slightly spacy

I had to stop taking Levsin because of the drying effects. Not only did it cause horrible dry mouth, but it also dryed out my eyes so badly that I wasn't able to wear my contacts. I have naturally dry eyes anyway, so this made it much worse. Also, it caused an elevation of pressure in my eyes as well as eye pain and headaches. I was on it for 2 weeks and just went off. I'm hoping I can remain stable with diet and teas. If not, I'll have to find a different type of medication.
