I am looking for some relief. I am 8 weeks pregnant and am starting to suffer terribly with diarrhea and cramping. Over the summer I suffered 5 long weeks with horrible cramping and was finally prescribed Buscopan and Amitryptaline. Both of which I have had to stop using in the last three weeks (when I found out I was pregnant). I get anxious everytime my tummy cramps up even slightly. The thought of those cramps is enough to die. The diarrhea has been non-stop for three weeks. Please tell me there is a relief out there that is safe during pregnancy. Any advice would be great. I have read the sticky from Heather. I am looking for your input on what I should try. I am trying to be excited about the baby ...but it is really hard right now.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Unfortunately I don't have any advice for you because I've never been pregnant. But I would love to hear what others would recommend to you because I have been trying to get pregnant also.

I can relate to you, I get very anxious when I just cramp up even a little. I hate it! It really affects every part of my life.

Honestly, I don't know how I can help you. I'm sorry you're suffering so much, but I can relate somewhat to how you feel. I'm PG now with my second. I'm not very far along, and I actually have no idea. I have my first doctor's appointment tomorrow. I've been really gassy lately, with a lot of gas pains. I've had D on and off with the cramping. I know how you feel: living in fear of the next diarrhea/cramping pain. But I really think that only makes our guts act crazier. It's hard not to stress, and I know I do it, but the calmer I stay, the better I feel. It's just hard to remember that.
Also, I know I can't relate because I've never taken a prescription drug for my IBS. You must have really been suffering, so I probably can't imagine what you are going through. I would also suggest talking to your doctor...that's what they are there for after all! Call ASAP and make an appointment, maybe it will help ease your worries.
I never had IBS until after my first pregnancy- I seemed to develop it following my son's birth, but then again, I did have a lot of tummy problems during my pregnancy, so maybe I developed it during it? I'm not really sure. I know in the beginning I had a ton of gas and D. I assumed it was a normal pregnancy thing, but like you, I worry a lot. I really hope the second trimester will be better, at least it was in my first pregnancy. It got a lot better actually. Also I think we learn what exactly our bodies will tolerate while pregnant.
As with my last pregnancy, I'm finding chicken to look, smell, and sound absolutely gross, but that's usually what I would eat for dinner! Now I have no idea what to eat! I hardly eat enough as is, and now I'm without my chicken. The smell of it literally makes me gag. You probably aren't eating much just because of the pain and diarrhea. I lost a lot of weight my first trimester last time for the same reason.

Just know that there are people here who know where you're coming from. I hope you start to feel better soon and that you get to talk to you doctor immediately! By my third trimester last time I had gotten my stomach under control, but I developed pregnancy related heartburn. My son was up high, pushing my stomach into my esophagus causing reflux almost every night. I know what you mean when you say it's hard to enjoy this time when you're in such discomfort. I really hope things improve for you...

take care and let me know how you are doing!

Amber

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I have talked to my doctor about it. He says the same things as many of the websites that I have read "Take Buscopan only when the benefits outweigh the risks". Well at this point it is a very hard decision to make. I am not suffering all day long. I eat and then if I am lucky I'll make it to another meal before my tummy decides to act up. I know that stress is a HUGE factor with IBS...I try to tell myself that but...it being my first pregnancy I am soo anxious. I will try to bare the cramps and diarrhea over the next month. I'll be in my second trimester mid April. I might feel more comfortable taking meds if I need to then. Until then, I'll Immodium close at hand and I'll really stick to a good diet for both me and the baby. Thanks again for the input.
