I agree with everyone: I think your roommate should be properly tested (self diagnosis is very dangerous). Like all diets, your roommate has to do what works for her. Heather's books have been invaluable to me and have given back control of my symptoms. Good Luck! Mary

Personally, I hadn't even heard of Heather's book till I recently found this site. Up until then, I was basiclly going on trial and error, and basiclly ended up with praticly the same diet that Heather recommends. Actually I was rather surprised when I found this site, at how closely my trigger foods were to what she was saying they would be! I am VERY sensetive to insoluble fiber. So even though you may not find it helpful, personally I think she's right, at least with most people who have IBS. Obviously it may not apply to everyone, but it definitly works for people.

<<They have wheat flour, but it's refined wheat (white flour), not whole wheat. >>

I'm having a hard time getting this idea into my head.
Would it be possible for someone to mention some name
brands of breads that are safe to eat? Right now
I'm eating rye bread. It seems not to bother me, but
I sure like more choices. I was eating Oat bread but they stopped selling it here except for the nut oat bread and I
can't tolerate that.

Hi and welcome to the boards!

This can be a little confusing. They both start from wheat. Whole wheat still has the bran. Once it's been processed more to have the bran removed, it's called white wheat flour. When they list ingredients, they'll usually just call it wheat flour. Just remember if it doesn't say 'whole' it's safe.

I usually either make my own bread or buy fresh baked Italian or French bread, so I can't really help you on brands. You'll have to check the ingredients. Or if you list where 'here' is (US, UK, etc.) someone may be able to give you a brand. Here's a thread on one brand: web page

You can also use pita bread or tortillas for some change too.

If one thing worked for everyone then IBS would no
longer be a problem because we would all have a
handle on it. I think we just have to take what
we want from what we read and learn and leave the
rest. I know that for me, my body works in it's
own special way and I can't judge whats good for
me by whats good for someone else. I try things
and when they don't work I don't try them again
and when they do work I stick to them.

I find Ginger tea and Acacia are my friends and I'm
trying to learn about insoluble fiber.
It's confusing to me but I know I'll get it
if I hang in here and try to listen and learn.

I personally hate to cook so that was my biggest
problem with Heathers book.
I want frozen Heather's diet meals so I can just
pop them in my mouth. LOL

I can't eat soy does anyone else have a problem with soy?

Well, I found where to get the Peppermint caps and I ordered some, but I have a question.

Quoting from the webpage, "Peppermint also contains essential oils that stimulate the gallbladder to secrete its store of bile, which the body uses to digest fats".
So my question is if you've had your gall bladder removed would this be okay to take?
I take Cholestramine which Binds liver bile salts and am wondering if there is any effect good
or bad with the peppermint caps? Would the caps prevent
the cholestramine from doing it's work? Any information
would be helpful.

Hi -- I hope that you and doing well -- and that your GI tract is behaving itself!!

I had so many tests done, I forget what they were all for! Which ones tested for bacterial infections, parasites, or gullbladder problems? How would I know if I had one? I remember peeing in a glass twice... maybe they use urine to test for these things?

Thanks, All!

I am really, really sorry you and your roommates are having problems. IBS is a long, personal struggle to find out what works and doesn't work to help decrease your problem. Also, IBS cannnot be cured, and many other problems mimic IBS.

Please note that Heather encourages everyone to avoid trigger foods. For example, you may want to buy some vegan, low fat grahmn crackers. However, she points out that somethings, such as the aforementioned butter grahmn cracker, can be consumed in small amounts on a full tummy. For example, she says that she consistently eats CHOCOLATE at the end of a meal, because her stomach is full and it passes through easily. I have found this to be true in my own case as well... but no two tummies are alike.

Therefore, I feel that Heather doesn't contradict herself, but instead encourages you to:
1. be aware of what triggers you. If 1/6 of an egg yolk in a grahmn cracker doesn't bother you -- cool. If it doesn-- avoid it.
2. Test, Test, Test -- slowly incorporate foods into your diet to pin point triggers.
3. Don't give up good food entirely, and don't be afraid of food. You need to figure out what you can handle and what you can't. It's your body... get to know it, and decide what you put into it.

I hope this helps!

Best Wishes!!!! I mean that!!!
Shanna
