i am sorry to say this, but i am going to have to stop posting here for a while and take myself a break. the truth of the matter is that i am not doing all that well~phsyically, mentally and emotionally--with my IBS, with managing my stress, with managing my activities and work and finally with managing my life. no one here has given me an influence to leave. in fact, all of you who have replied to my many, many questions surrounding my countless symptoms, have been so great and thoughtful to keep me in your thoughts. its really been nice to have somewhere to talk about my problems, but i just dont feel as though i am getting the actual medical resolutions i need right now. i have not really felt better from following heather's diet, and as of late i have felt even worse. i am listening to my body now and taking this as a sign that maybe i need to get some help that is beyond me and my downtown with my computer. i just know that i cannot go another year feeling this way and now more then ever, i need to find some answers. i just wanted to say goodbye to all of you who have cared about me since i began posting in 2004. your posts were incredibly generous and very thoughtful. perhaps, one day when i am better, i will pop in to say hi. but for now, it was good to meet all of you. take care and get well

I know how frustrated you are, I and lot's of other C's have been there. Heather's diet for C's is not at all straight foward. There is almost always quite a few modifactions that are necessary for a given person, and it's not at all well quantified. For example, there's no recommended value for daily IF consumption. She just says you have to eat IF,well that's nice, how much?! Of course, this will vary from person to person. The idea you get from her EFI book is in general way too low, and a bit high in SF which leads to worsening C and everything associated with it.Before I came down to Chicago, I wasn't doing bad, but not real good by any means. Then I saw Jaime's post on IF, and it dawned on me that's it!!! That IS THE KEY!!! So, I immediately upped my IF intake through both fruits and veggies and whole grains. She was just doing fruits and veggies. Since then, my BM's have gotten consistently better day by day. It's just over a week now, and I'm having two very near normal BM's per day, less gas, less discomfort, and NO pain. I've even cut out the Bentyl during this time, realizing it was not really helping and was zombitizing me like Kree has mentioned. Right now, I'm not taking any SFS, all my fiber is from food. My contention is that one can readily do that . If for whatever reason you can't get all your fiber from food, then an SFS is definitely appropriate. I think that Beth may even try my approach since it's working so good for me. Right now I'm sending her my daily diet info. so she can can an *exact* of how much IF(and SF) and from what . I or she could foward a copy of it, if you'd like. From what you told me about what you ate in Croatia, you were getting the right amount of IF. Your change in diet since you've come back is, I think, the primary cause of your problems. I should also note that I'm not wholly stabilizing by diet. I am taking Paxil as I have mentioned. I definitely think that it is necessary, at least now. I believe that Dr.John Gershon's(of Columbia Univ.in NY) SSRI theory is definitely bonafide. It is working for me and a whole lot of others. I definitely think you should try it. Also, if your present GI doc is not helping you too much, I would suggest that you try the doc that Beth and I have, Dr. Michael Jones of the Northwestern Med. School Faculty.Beth or I can get you his contact info. So, in summary, I think you should stay on the boards, and try out my suggestions. The emotional help I've gotten from the boards has been tremendous! That, of course con- tributes to stabilization too. Think about it. In any case, I'll definitely email about the next get together which I think will be in the middle of May. {{hugs}} -Bob

and of course i take your advice to heart and appreciate you trying to get me to stay but for now, even if it's just a little while, i think i need to take a break. i want to make up my own diet that mimics that of the one i had overseas with the highest hopes of changing this condition. i know i just need some mental clarification and really feel that i can do that thru my own diet and deep concentration on my body rhythems and exercise. my bf and i are planning another european vacation and i want to be at my most stable point by the time we reach our take-off date. its also early enough now from summer that i can take my time with this instead of rushing the success. i have your email address as well as beths and will probably keep in touch as much as i can. im working on a 2nd job and i just wanted to make sure i didnt have too much stress going into it. that is my most serious IBS trigger of all! if your doctor is good, and generally caring, and knows about other alternative treatments, i would love info about how to contact him. im hunting for a naturpathic doctor with my mom for further help. thanks again bob for posting to me. im not deleting this account since i just got done making me new picture icon lol--and also b/c i do want to return, but when im feeling better and when i have some working methods to share. talk to you later bob! if you could, and feel like it, would you be able to send me your diet that you sent to beth? id love to see how you played around with your foods SF vs. IF and which ones work out for you. thanks again--bye

Your absence is a total loss for us...for me. I have become so attatched to you as a friend as a support in the pursuit of feeling better. I am so on the same page as you. We both have the same symptoms and the same outcome (or lack of outcome) on the diet. I was hoping we could always go throgh this together...sharing what helps/what hurts.
I understand your decision. Michelle (from Georgia) has gone on her own diet (well, the Maker's Diet) for her D and so far, she has never felt better. She has just begun...but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her. She is not consuming any carbs for 2 weeks. She is eating raw salads, eggs fried in coconut oil, etc.
I am torn...I want to beg you to stay....but I understand why you feel that maybe leaving the board is in your best interest.
Please know that you are always welcome...and you can always come back...and hopefully share what has helped you!!!
Please keep emailing me. Perhaps we can meet? Please keep me updated on how you are, physically, emotionally, in your life....the total package!
What brought you to this decision? Do you have a new plan of action? A new diet?
Oh, take care. I love you, Little Bear. Big hugs!

Please stay, Ashley!
Heather's guide isn't for everyone. However, that doesn't mean that your input is not valued!!! Your ideas, your experiences in your struggles with IBS & diet/lifestyle management are helpful! I know and understand completely about having to figure out your own program/routine. (I don't follow Heather's "diet"--I do apply a lot of her ideas, though, & yes, they are exceptionally helpful!)
Please stick around--do your own thing, but stick around. WE LIKE YOU!!! So...don't feel pressured to eat for IBS if it's not your instinct to do so at this time.
Kate, IBS-D.

Bob, I'm newish here. I have a question about your comments here about IBS-C and the diet. I have been feeling better on the diet but no change with the C. I think it's even gotten a little worse. So...you eat more veggies and fruit? Any other suggestions about what to do/add/change to Heather's diet for C?
BTW- in the last 2 weeks BOTH of my kids (ages 7 and 10) have been to the doctor with severe stomach pain. We had X-rays and doc said, they're both constipated and a bit backed up! Guess they take after their mom. Poor little buggers.
