I'm the mother of a 23y.o. IBS sufferer who has been following Heather's diet for the past year. The D is gone now, thanks to the soluble fiber (she reverts to it whenever the gas & pains start), but the trade off is that constipation has become a severe problem. Adding whole grain products gives her pains. We need advice!

So what sort of insoluble fiber is she getting? Remember, Heather's diet does not cut out fruits and vegetables! Whole grains can be problematic, but you still need to get insoluble fiber with every meal and fruits and vegetables are the best way to do this. Please do a search - this has come up repeatedly on this board and Heather did a special newsletter on constipation.

For immediate relife, I use Dulcolax supositories. They help get things going. As far as the soluble fiber is she on a supplement? she should be, to keep her stable. Also keep up on the fruits & veggies, & water!!!! Drink drink drink! Also excersize is crucial for C! Hope this helps.

I can NOT use any grain to get my IF, no whole grain ANYTHING, not oat, wheat, nothing, brings on pains and spasms and bloat.

I rely on fruits and veggies for my IF and also lately am having a lot of good luck with WELL COOKED beans. Amy's Organics makes a great Black Bean Vegetable and Lentil Vegetable that I actually read about from someone on here, anyway, they are becoming a good staple for me. I pop a couple beano first to head off gas but I surprisingly get very little gas from beans and helps BM's a lot.

I'm going to try those soups. What do you eat with them as an SF buffer....or any type of additional food to be a complete meal?

Did you start out slowly with 1/2 serving or anything to work up a tolerance? Or did you start with a full serving?

How many beano do you take with them?
Thanks!

Hi Michelle, oh ho, things are starting to click in my head.
About two weeks ago, I went out to new Mexican restaurant in
my area, the only one around in my area, unless you count
Taco Hell. I went on a friday night, so just in case I had
the rest of the weekend to recover. I had a grilled chicken
salad with a ton of cooked black beans in it. To my surprise
, I woke up saturday not feeling too bad, somehat gassy, but
I didn't eat any beano(I have to try this stuff). However,I
had the best BM's in a while that day! This jives with what'
s happening with you. Very interesting. -Bob

Here's what I do, I break up a piece of my VERY safe homemade bread (white flour only, homemade guarantees no HFCS which is EEEEEVIL ...) anyway, I break that up in bottom of bowl and then pour soup over, to eat. Yummy...

I take 2 little beano tabs first. Works for me anyway!

Beth, I don't think the type will matter. Just make sure to
eat some(enough)SF before eating the bean soups.Like I just
posted to Michelle, she may be on to something really good.

I was hoping Michelle could give me some ideas. I'm not good with meal planning.

And I was also wondering how many beano she takes. Hopefully she will check back in.

Are you still taking 2 generic citrucel with meals? Or have you increased it? How are you doing on it? Have you been able to reduce the amount of lactulose you take a day?

Thanks...I'm still looking for answers!

As I posted on the fitness boards...I'm taking 4 benefiber before each meal and eating dried apricots at least once a day (with 3 beano before the apricots) and I'm going at LEAST once a day!!!

I'm also eating a mostly veggie fruit diet. Check out my meals for the day in the fitness room Bethi *hugs*

Love ya!

Or, even have the bean soup as a sweet potato sauce, for even more fiber, lol!!!

It would probably compliment a squash well too.

What is benefiber. Since we don't live in the States, I have no idea what it is. Could you look at the package and write me what it contains?

Yes, I have read what Heather wrote about getting fiber. I bought her some fiber product that contains PEG (polyethelyn glycol) and also recommended using Aloe pills for immediate relief. Do you or anyone else have any experience with these products?

Regarding diet, my daughter knows she has to add in fruit and vegetables, but she's not sure what to add in first.

Hey there Beth!

How are you?

Well, I've increased my intake of Citricell pills to 4x a day. Works well. As for the Lactulose, I only took that 1x since Ive had it. I'm glad I don't need to take it everyday!

Any luck with finding stuff that works for you?? I hope so, let me know!

you take a total of 8 tablets a day...or 4 grams of fiber per day?

I'm still searching, unfortunately. I'm so tired of trying to figure this out.

I'm sorry about that...

Benefiber is a soluble fiber supplement containing guar gum. Heather seels Acacia fiber (whioch works great for many) and there are other like equlactin, metamucil and such. Many of us try several fiber supplements before we find one that works for us...

Did I answer your question sufficiently? If not let me know Hurray for you being such a great mommy helping your daughter out...you're both super fortunate to have each other *hugs*

I know you'll ignore anything I add to this post, but I started adding hard-core beans by the tablespoon full. One of my favourite "snacks" at the moment is carrots (baby, organic, baked or steamed/chilled) and hummus. It's great with yellow or green zucchini, as well. Carrots are really good SF, especially with legumes and complimentary in flavours. I'm going through this creepy phase where my body actually wants/craves carrots for dessert, of all things (I have a salt deficiency)! Of all legumes, I find lentils the most gentle of all. As I'm not feeling meaty of late, this is becoming a staple.

I would eat whichever type of rice your gut instinct tells you to eat. Start with less, because they are potent, lol.
A little goes a long way. Maybe try 2 tbsp. to start?

Personally, I find red beans the most problematic/"iffy" and avoid them at all costs!

Baby steps.

That's my worthless input. Best wishes.

Kate, IBS-D.

Beth- I think stick with whatever rice you normally eat. If you change to brown when you normally eat white you might confuse your system and vice versa. I eat brown rice most of the time so when I eat beans (less frequently now than I used to) I eat it with that. Use whatever works for you.

Kate- I'm with you on the carrots- I cannot get enough of them- interestingly I was talking to a friend's Mum who is a diabetic at the weekend and she can't eat them at all because they are very high in sugar- so this might be why you are craving them as dessert!

Cailin, that's interesting--my family is full of raging diabetics who cannot eat carrots and beets. I guess, in an IBS-health-nut-case kind of way, carrots are my "cookies."

Also, they are doing wonders for my skin and bowel tone. They are great "poop" toners and heal my raw-D bum really fast. So...delicious treats and low cal/safe dip sticks with IF snacks/meals and internal healers. When I eat carrots, my guts feel pretty darn good. Also, I note, if I've gone to excess with the spices, they tend to naturally freshen my breath and quelch any internal fire!

I haven't smoked in 15 weeks and I read, recently, that carrots and beets are really good lung cleansers and liver cleansers.

I know you're having a problem with sugar, Cailin, from your posts on the fitness board. Perhaps including/substituting/incorporating more safe naturally sweet treats in your diet? Trust me, they make you glow and energize without depressing.

Kate, IBS-D.

Thanks Kate.

I would eat carrots every day if I could, they are my favourite vegetable (ha probably because of all the sugar in them!) I agree that I need to get my sugar elsewhere than in sugarfilled "gack" and am trying soo hard. Today I had a soy hot chocolate as a big treat following a terrible morning and it was sooo good, and at least as well as the sweet taste I got calcium etc from the milk. One day at a time! Yesterday I was hungover and bad but I am reformed Sinead today

Great work to you on the giving up smoking, it takes a strong character to do it, keep up the good work.
