Hi everyone,
Does anybody know if there are any low sugar soy yogurts out there? I've been buying the Wholesoy yogurts because they are the best I've tasted so far but they have alot of sugar in them - at least 12 to 18 grams per container.
I love yogurt and don't want to give it up, but I don't want all that sugar in there either.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Carol

I have been on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet for 6 mos. which is amazing as far as controlling the D. It requires that you make your own yogurt which is sugar free and I found that very simple to do. My husband bought mw an electric yogurt maker and I now make my own yogurt. Good luck Carolyn RS

Is it possible to have an alergic reaction to soy and products made from rice (rice milk, rice cheese). I feel when I eat either of these my IBS gets out of control. Does anyone have any information on rice and soy products or have experienced the same thing?

I know soy for some is an allergic or sensitive food. I think it depends on the individuel (just like some can tolerate eggs, and others cant). I seem to do well with soy.

I always get plain. Note: as soy is a bean, sugars naturally occur. Cow or goat or sheep yogurt has sugar naturally occurring as well--it's called lactose. This is highly problematic (understatement) for IBS.

Hi Carolyn,
That sounds great!! What is the brand of the yogurt maker that he bought for you? I'd like to look into that. I thought about making my own, but I didn't know there was a machine that could do it and I also thought it would be extremely difficult. Could you give me the recipe for it as well?
Thanks for the advice,
Carol

I also do OK with soy, except I noticed that if I consume too much of it I start getting more constipated (I am C).

Soy is a bean--it is impossible to remove all of the carbohydrate from it. Even natural, unsweetened soy milk still has a few grams of carbohydrate in it BECAUSE it is derived from a bean. The yogurt of a mammal would still have sugar or carbohydrate. The form of that sugar is LACTOSE. It is simple to make your own yogurt (bean or mammal hosted) WITHOUT added sugars, but the medium itself, being a bean naturally has a few occurring sugars.

Hi Kate,
I do understand what you are saying and I don't mind a few grams of sugar in the yogurt, but 12 to 18 grams for a small container is way too much for me. I wouldn't mind under 10 grams.
Thanks for the info,
Carol

Hi Carol, I haven't found any low sugar ones. However here are the stats on the three most common brands,
Silk Stoneyfield Trader Joe's Fat 2 g 2 g 3 g Sodium 25mg 35mg 20mg Fiber 1 g 4 g 2 g Sugar 22 g 27 g 21 g Protein 4 g 7 g 6 g Carbs 31 g 32 g 30 g Cal 160 160 170 taste 1 3 2 texture 1 3 2 price .99* .99* .99#
*=Jewel on Lincoln Ave.,Chicago #=Trader Joe's on Lincoln Ave. Chicago
Notes: Silk was no.1 by far and away. Stonyfield was a close 3rd to TJ's. Strawberry was the only flavor tested. Also, the TJ's does not sell any other brand but their own.Same with their soy cheeses. -Bob

Hey Carol,
I'm lactose intolerant and diabetic, so I also have to watch the sugar content in my soy yogurt...I never buy the Wholesoy or Silk brands, because they have added sugars in them. The brand I buy is Wildwood, and I get the plain, unsweetened kind, which has only a few grams of carbohydrates in it, and several grams of fiber. I'm not sure if you have a store that carries it (I live in California, and the Whole Foods in my hometown does) but if you can't find it, you can probably order it online. Hope that helps!

It looks like making your own might be the best option. It's actually ludicrously simple. If you use PLAIN/natural, unsweetened soy milk you obviously control the amount of carbohydrate & sugars.

Hi Julia,
Thanks for your thought. I've heard of Wildwood, but have not seen it in my regular grocery store (they have an organic section). I'd have to search the health food stores to see if they carry it.
I just ordered a yogurt maker and I am going to try and make it myself. If that doesn't work out, I will look for the Wildwood yogurts.
Thanks again,
Carol

Wow Bob!! Thanks for the info. That just goes to show that almost all of the soy yogurts have alot of sugar and there isn't a large selection of them. I got a suggestion to buy a yogurt maker (which I did) or try Wildwood yogurts. Hopefully the yogurt maker does the trick.
Thanks again for the info,
Carol

Hi Carol, You're welcome! Wildwood tastes very tart! Almost as tart as a lemon. I've never heard of a mechanical yogurt maker, ice cream machines, yes, but never a yogurt maker. Is it like an ice cream machine? -Bob
