Hi! I had a pretty bad attack yesterday. When I have an attack, I always try to find out why I did. I came up with a possible explanation yesterday and I would like to know if it makes any sense. The two worst attacks I'va had lately both happened the day after I was either on a boat or on a plane. Since last year, I tend to have motion sickness symptoms when I travel. I feel dizzy and weird but so far, I haven't vomitted. I always feel very scared to be sick. Obviously, that makes me go through a lot of stress. e.g.: I don't wanna be sick, I don't wanna have an attack on the boat/place, I don't wanna have an IBS attack right now, etc...These are the things I say to myself. I think it makes my intestines very stressed and the day after, when it sees that everything's okay, it just lets go and that causes a diarrhea attack.
What do you think? I am taking the plane again on Tuesday and I will try to tell myself something more reassuring. If you have any suggestions, let me know...
Thanks!

Hi Chantale, It sounds very plausible. However, remember that UIA's(Unidentified IBS Attacks) are not uncommon at all . Try taking some type of motion sickness remedy like drama- mine, that might help. -Bob

Interesting. I had motion sickness all my life as a child, and even now sometimes. I had D when I was younger, although I am a C now. When I finally learned how to relax and calm myself, that's when I think it switched to C. That and I probably wasn't eating enough during the time it started to switch. ....I really can't win.

I feel your pain--I get motion sickness too, but I have never vomited from it--I just get really worried that I will! That might, in turn, cause more problems the next day! I would avoid dramamine, unless you want to go to sleep! I am going on a road trip/plane back home next week, so I invested in an arm band that sends impulses to the part of your brain that is affected by motion. It haven't used it yet, but it has received rave reviews. It is called: Relief Band Device. I got mine from drugstore.com. I can't take anything over the counter because of the meds I take for IBS and my heart--both make me drowsy, so dramamine (which would normally make me super tired and groggy all day anyway) would probably make me pass out.
Something else natural you could try is ginger. Ginger has been said to work better than dramamine for nausea/vomiting associated with motion and morning sickness. I always take it with me every where I go. It usually works for me as long as I take it an hour before and then during the activity.
And last, if you are worried about having a D attack during the activity, just take some Immodium ahead of time as a preventative. Tell yourself that you are covered and that nothing will happen! As long as I take it ahead of time, I have never had problems with attacks due to the stresses of travelling.
Good luck!

Hi!! Thanks for the advice. I think ginger really helps. I do not take motion sickness pills because they really do make me feel sleepy and weird. As for Imodium as prevention, I don't know. I haven't taken Imodium since I was diagnosed with IBS because I have alternance and I'm afraid I will get pretty bad C from taking it and that it will be followed by mild diarrhea. However, I will go to the drugstore to see if they have the other thing you talked about, with the impulse. I'll see what I can get.
