I'm new to these boards (registered couple days ago); however, I've had Heather's "Eating for IBS" for at least a year. I'm IBS-D (numerous years)and GERD. I notice that a lot of the recipes in her book incorporate a lot of my trigger foods. From just reading some of the postings, it appears to me that a lot of you have no problems with these. Is there anyone with suggestions or anyone with GERD that has the same problem?

I have GERD, but have been sucessfully treated. As long as I continue my medication, I can have many acidic foods sucessfully--but in small amounts. When you say they are triggers for you, do you mean that they cause D, or that you just get acid reflux from them? I have found that the benefits of peppermint far outway the adverse reaction--I do get heart burn sometimes from the peppermint, but I live with it because it makes my stomach feel better. Usually it doesn't last long. But if you can't have peppermint at all, then try fennel instead. Are you doing anything else for the IBS symptoms?

These triggers give me severe heartburn and D. I was diagnosed sev. years ago with a hiatal hernia that is the main reason for the GERD. Dr. has had me on a host of medications over the years-- ranging from sedatives, antidepressants, stomach muscle relaxants, anti-diarrheals. I am currently taking Bentyl and Immodium and just started on a course of Flagyl for bacterial overgrowth. I have tried fennel tea and do not find it objectionable.

I'm also a "D". I've been with the Boards for about 3-4 years now.
It's good that you know what your triggers are. For me, it's all dairy, calcium supplements, and most antibiotics. However, I don't have GERD. I do not have a problem with onions, garlic, tomatoes, peppermint and spices -- well, except for Heather's peppermint capsules; they give me extreme indigestion. But I can tolerate peppermint tea or peppermint candy.
Some folks can tolerate things others can't. For example, my dear friend here on the Boards can tolerate dairy, while it's a killer for me. Conversely, I can tolerate almost all fruit, salads, and most fresh veggies, while she, like most folks with IBS, wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.
I suggest you start a new thread entitled "GERD Help Please"; you'll get a lot more responses from all those who suffer with GERD.

Don't worry, there are a lot of us here who have those same triggers. Ketchup is like death to me, and anytime anybody mentione spices like cinnamon or cayane pepper, I do a body flip!
A lot of us can't incorporate Heather's recipes because she has a much more lenient diet. I'd be in severe pain if I ate an apple, artichoke or asperagus (ugh!), or a serving of green beans even if I'd downed a bottle of imodium and malox. Her ideas do give good meal ideas though, and you just have to tweak her recipes to suit your situation.
Anyway good luck to you, and feel free to stay and chat with us anyways! You'll find that though some people here won't know what you're talking about, some here will be exactly on the same page (peppermint is supposed to help?? Yikes!)

Jojo, I read an article today about De-glycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL). DGL was tested against prescription drugs and results showed that It is equally, if not more, effective than prescription and over the counter remedies. No side effects. You chew them 20 min before a meal and before bedtime. They really help me. They increase mucous and actually heal sore intestines. They contain flavonaids, which are known to inhibit both acid secretion and the growth of harmful intestinal bacteria, including H.pylori. Also, do you have the head of your bed raised? B

I own Heather's cookbook and I cannot cook the majority of the entrees in the book. I cannot handle spices like chili powder or onions! I don't use any of the recipes and very few from the recipe board on this sight. Sometimes I wonder how the people with IBS can eat foods with onion and curry and garlic and all those spicy, gassy foods. I cannot.
I do chicken with easy to digest herbs (not spices) like Basil, Sage, Dill, thyme, tarragon, etc. It may be bland for some, but it if it doesn't cause increased pain and gas, it does wonders for the taste! I enjoy it more than I would a stir fry or entree made with peppers, onions, and garlic!!! Yikes! No thank you. I'll just eat plain, thank you!

The GERD or the other symptoms besides that? I don't have GERD...but as you know, I suffer from all the other lovely symptoms. Would DGL help anything besides GERD? Or is the primary symptom?

Thanks for the info. Haven't tried this but would be willing. I've begged hubby to elevate somehow the head of our bed, but he insists that there is no way for the type of bed we have. I have improvised with a slope using blankets under my sheets and it does help.

Beth, after doing some research, it sounds like it is mostly for GERD, peptic ulcers and duodenal ulcers. A sympton of duodenal ulcers is constant pain in lower abdomen. I think you can have one without any acid reflux. Just an idea. They are supposed to heal the stomach and the intestines. If you send me your address by e-mail, I'll send you a few. B

You think it still may help even though I don't have GERD? I appreciate your offer. I can't afford to buy another supplement only to use 3 or 4 times before finding out it doesn't help....or even hurts!

Gigi, The DGL helps me a lot! When I remember to take it, that is. I take one Pepcid a day and I try to take the DGL before meals and before bed. It isn't terribly expensive and you get it at health food stores. You can take it during the night if you get awakened by reflux. Chew it well. I'm scared to quit the Pepcid, but I might soon just to see how it goes. B
