I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis and IBS. I have had 3 rounds of antibiotics since mid-December. I get better but not well. I have now consulted with 5 doctors, who all agree that surgery is needed. I am not wanting surgery but feel I need to listen to the docs. Presently I am using the diet from your website and drinking alot of pepermint tea. Do you have any thoughts about the surgery?

Generally speaking from where I am (Ontario Canada), surgery is recommended if there are severe bouts of diverticulitis, bleeding were medicaion has not controlled it.

I know I have some large diverticul and because of periods of constipation where in the past they were the reverse I asked specialist of the possibility of surgery.

His suggestion is merely increasing fibre, with Metamucil or equal and lots of water.

I too have IBS and Diverticulosis. I've had two diverticulitis attacks. My GI told me he would remove part of my colon only if I had four attacks and the "pockets" were more numerous than they are now. That hasn't happened -- YET.

I actually don't fear the surgery, though, because I understand you end up feeling so much better after the "diverticulae" part of the colon is removed. I heard that not only from my GI but from other folks who have gone through the operation.

You're smart to get a second opinion, but after five, I'd say go for it.
