Indigestion tablets that contain calcium (like Tums) are ANTACIDS, which are also LAXATIVES. It's not the calcium in them that causes D - it's the fact that, as antacids, they have a laxative property.

Conversely, calcium, the mineral by itself (or, as it should always be taken, with Vitamin D to help absorption), has a slightly constipating effect, which means that it can be helpful for D.

Hope that clears things up

Calcium supplements cause me EXTREME cramps and ultimate "D". I've been taking 1,200mg. of Calcium + D religiously every single day for over 28 years, and suddenly my body can't tolerate it any more. I had to cut way back on my dosage; now I'm barely able to handle 600mg. a day.

Hope you fare better than I. BTW, you want Calcium Carbonate PLUS D. The purpose of the vitamin D is to aid in the body's absorption of the calcium.

The one I have here is Holland & Barrett chewable calcium its 500mg of calcium carbonate per tablet but it does have quite a few other things in it like sucrose, dextrose, cotton seed oil etc

I am IBS D, and have tried taking calcium it works initially for the first week or so, then WHAM!!!! diarrohea hell...calcium seems to make my D worse if that is at all possible...sounds terrible, but calcium caused me to end up with no warning, of an impending BM, it is sooo sudden like a bucket of water ripping through my body, sort of like trying to stop a freight train with your little finger......so for obvious reasons I wont touch the stuff...I have tried to take calcium on three different occassions, just to make sure it was the calcium causing the "horrific" problems and nothing else..and every time I had the same results...so I would just say be very careful!!
