I had onset in '91, was finally diagnosed in '92. I stabilized within another year and, quite honestly, didn't give my digestive tract much thought again until 3 years ago. From '93 until '02 I had very mild symptoms, but wasn't driven back to the GI for more tests/help until '02. Since that time, I have once again almost stabilized, but this time my symptoms are hanging around more consistantly. If I get too far off the beaten track foodwise (too much, too greasy, ice cream) I REALLY pay for it! I also have to be very faithful with the SF and other supplements to maintain what stability I have acheived. I have also recently added a very small dose of AD that has also helped me to be more comfortable.
Stress is my biggest trigger though, and these past 5-7 years have been filled with quite a bit of extreme circumstances all in a row. My initial onset was also triggered by a HUGE life event. I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but that's how IBS has treated me thus far.

Bama, Oh I wasn't looking for anything in particular. Like everybody else. I'm just trying to figure out the ins and outs of IBS. Well, at least you got nine years of relative relief. There seems to be a little correlation with age, the older you get the more the symptoms hang around. I just got through reading and replying to Michelle's LR post. Talk about taking your breath away, I felt so sorry for her! That's got to be an incredible emotional trauma. It just seems so unfair to the poor little ones. All's we can do is pray for their souls. Sorry to hear that you went through it too. I wish you all the best in dealing with heart wrenching emotional pain of it. -Bob

Thanks Bob! You are kind to say that! Michelle has really suffered like no one else I have known in that regard! I pray we all get some relief from our stomach troubles, and I am thankful I had what I did. Right now, I'm just glad to be as stable as I am. I'm learning to manage it without it managing me!
I love these boards! The support and friendship has really made a difference in my life! Thanks for caring.

I've had IBS for almost 48 years now (all of my life). All through my childhood, teens and 20s I suffered from IBS-C. Then around 30 I slowly began to develop IBS-D problems. Nowadays I am predominantly IBS-D and if I didn't follow a very careful diet, I could easily alternate between C and D.
My IBS has also become much more severe over time. When I was younger, I could get away with eating almost a "normal" diet. It's true I would get terrible attacks every now and then, but not all the time.
Nowadays I wouldn't even dare look at an unsafe food. I have to be extremely careful and my diet is much more limited than when I was younger. Luckily, with all these years of IBS experience, I am pretty much a pro when it comes to knowing what I can safely have to eat and what I cannot eat so, for the most part, I lead a normal, pain-free life with only occasional bouts of D if I overeat at a meal or around my M.

Bama, Oh you're very welcome! You know, in retrospect, the wonderful support I got from the board members after my stroke is what's turned my health around. The diet changes and Paxil increase certainly helped, but the caring support of the board members has made all the difference. . -Bob

I'm so glad you are doing well! I can't imagine how scary a stroke must have been! This is the first board I've ever been a part of, and truly, it has been an amazing experience. And now, I feel like I've made another friend! Thanks again, Kim

I feel this way about you, sweetie. And know you have another friend right here! You're posts always give me some hope and you are always willing to post what has helped you...even if it's over and over again!
And, even though the diet hasn't helped me at all, this board has saved my life... so many loving, caring, supportive souls. I am blessed to have you all in my life...and all the prayers that are said for me are a gift!

Oh, thank you Kim. Sorry I didn't realize you had your real name in your profile. I checked it when I saw Beth's post. However, I think incorporating your state in your nickname is pretty neat. It's one of the few states(maybe the only one) that has band named after it. I do particularly love their song,"Sweet home Alabama". So were you born and raised in Alabama? Say, have you ever heard of the 19th century song, "Rose of Alabama". One of the characters sang it in Clint Eastwood's "Outlaw Josey Wales" movie. -Bob

Hey Bob! I'm GA born and raised, but DH and I lived in OK and AR while he was in service. When he got out, we initially went back to GA, but all of his family are here in AL, and he wanted to be near his family for a change. We've lived here since '98. At this point, we hope to stay and make it our home state too.
