Possible to feel stomach discomfort/gas when increasing probiotics?

I'm taking Primal Defense and have been gradually increasing from 1 to 3 capsules a day. When I first started taking it, I was a little uncomfortable, but figured it was because I had recently been taking antibiotics. I upped to 2 capsules about 2 weeks ago and felt a little discomfort then. Then the day before yesterday I increased to 3 capsules. I had really bad gas pains last night and then had three BM's (not D though). I had been bloated ALL day yesterday and now, after the pain passed and the BM's, my tummy is as flat as can be. Could it be that my body is adjusting to the probiotic increase?

Or could it be the new chicken recipe I tried out? I made chicken nuggets using cayenne pepper, garlic powder, salt, and little lawry's seasoning. Do you think any of these spices may have been the culprit instead?

Thanks to everyone who answers!

Amber

They are very good for you but your body has to adjust and the first couple of weeks can be ugly. Also, you may not need that high a dosage, see if you don't start to feel better but if not just back down to where you were before. They made me very gassy in the beginning and weird BMs but I think they were "cleaning house" so to speak. HTH!

Hmmm, it might be either. With the probiotics, it could be that as you're increasing the quantity, it's detoxing your body and it might cause some bloating and wastes to expell from your body.
On the other hand I have a hard time with dishes that have cayenne in it. It irritates me and causes pain, bloating, and sometimes D for me.

Amber,

My guess is that it's the probiotics. Increased gas and bloat is common.

Just FYI, I had a bad time with Primal Defense. I tried increasing the dosage and it made my stomach hurt terribly. I also had tons of BMs. I guess it could be some sort of cleansing, but with me it never stopped. Plus the fact that I'd been on it for quite a while made me less likely to believe that I'd still be cleansing that long. All it did was make me feel worse so I gave up on it.

My advice would be that if you don't feel better soon, scrap the stuff and try something else. Primal Defense is so expensive and I've read a lot of articles lately about Jordan Rubin's stuff and how it's not all it's cracked up to be. He's even been warned by the FDA to stop touting Primal Defense as such a potent probiotic. Apparently, it doesn't contain all the levels of probiotics it claims.

All my other experiences with other probiotics have been about the same. I get increased gas the first week and a bit of bloating. It all subsides after that and I have no side effects.

If you like the Primal Defense though, let me know. I have nearly a full bottle left that I'd gladly send you:)

Hope you feel better soon!!

I wonder if his Digestive Enzymes are worth the money...or if he is just one big sham...prying on people by using the Bible and the impression he gives that his whole diet/supplements are based on God's word and the bible. That is really low if he is doing that. Going after the desperate Christian market!

Consumer Reports reported Primal Defense as having much lower levels of the probiotic than the label claimed to have at time of manufature. Primal Defense also had a high cost for the usual 1 to 3 daily recommended dose.

I wondered the same thing. I was so disillusioned by his whole diet and supplements regime. I went to a nutritionist some time ago for help with my IBS and, unfortunately, the guy pandered to my vulnerabilities and desire to do anything to help myself. He sold me on Rubin's diet and supplements. I later found out the nutritionist had a contract with Rubin and got his stuff wholesale to resell to clients. He apparently put EVERYONE on this diet and the same supplements, including Primal Defense, regardless of their digestive ailment. And the diet was the worst thing for IBS. And those supplements are sooo expensive! He wanted me to work up to 8 Primal Defense a day....8/day, buying a bottle of 180 at a time....you do the math as to how much he'd be selling/profiting. Anyway, I had horrible IBS relapse for about two months. I finally told him to shove it (and the diet) and promptly went back on Heather's diet and have never waivered since.

So, long story short, I did a lot of research on Rubin and found he is not taken very seriously by more prestigious, reliable medical specialists, doctors, and certified nutritionists. Google him..you'll find he got one of his degrees at a now defunct school in Hawaii that was closed for something (can't remember) and his nutritionist license was obtained online from some institute.

Yes, I use Bifantis and since I have been on it I have felt great but I did get some gas and some stomach discomfort the first few weeks. I know everyone may use a different type but this one works great for me. I am told it will in stores soon but as of now I buy it online. It is sold as Align. Lisa

The website kind of indicates that it works for both.
