When you experience a flare-up of pain and bloating, do you still continue to use your miralax and lactulose? I know that we are supposed to just start eating solubles and was wondering if taking the miralax or lactulose was helping or hurting during a flare-up. I am usually IBS-C, but during times of paina nd bloating, I'm not constipated, I just have the pain and bloating. Any thoughts?

Hi Mick, Hmm...this is a tough one. Usually men don't get
bloating, I don't know exactly why, but it does seem to be
the case. As for pain, usually the C is the root cause of it.
However, you're saying getting it without C. I don't know
where that would come from, unless it's a food allergy that
you're not aware of. -Bob

I'm a long time Miralax users. I often get pain and bloating without the C. I continue to take my miralax daily unless I'm having a rare bout of D!! I was on an antibiotic last week and I haven't needed miralax since then. If you want to try and cut back or cut it ok, I think it would be ok, just remember that it can take a few days to start working again so if you do get C it may take some time to get things moving again!

What do you think causes the pain and bloating without the C. When I get the pain, It almost feels like my colon is irritated. I can also get the pain without having any spasms. Your thoughts?

Well, I wished I knew!! I sometimes get what I call pain attacks that can last just a few days if I'm lucky and if I'm not up to several months. Its not really so much a spasm kind of pain, just an intense all over belly pain and LOTs of bloating. I can have bm's everyday during these pains attacks so I know its not always just from C. Heat does help, at least temporarily. I sleep with a heating pad on my tummy most of the time. Sometimes I can shorten a bad pain attack with the use of Xanax (A tranquillizer) and Vicodin (A strong and possiblity addictive pain medication) but most of the time, I just have to ride it out. I haven't had a SERIOUS pain attack in a while, thankfully. I think these bad pain attacks are probably caused by stress. I've treid Zelnorm and it didn't really help any. I've also tried all the different spasm drugs, I find Donnatol to help minimally but I haven't yet found out why or how to make it better.
